The White Rain Company, Danbury, CT, has acquired the rights to market and sell Te Tao in the U.S. Previously available only in Europe, Te Tao is a line of hair and body care products that combine Chinese herbal remedies with modern technology. The result is a product line that not only deeply cleanses but also soothes and treats the mind and body.
"Within the hair care category, aromatherapy products grew 18% in 2001. The White Rain Naturals line of shampoos, conditioners and styling aids helped fuel that growth, and we believe consumer interest in aromatherapy products will remain strong," said Bruce Travis, chief executive officer of The White Rain Company. "Te Tao is a best selling brand in Europe and it's been successfully test marketed in drug stores on the West and East Coast. Overall, we believe Te Tao will be a strong addition to our portfolio of brands. It will allow us to compete at a different price point in the hair care category and will help drive our continued growth in the herbal segment."
Developed by London-based Kuan Ltd., Te Tao was created around the principles of Chinese herbalism, which uses the healing and cleansing properties of herbs to promote healthy, balanced hair and therapeutic body care. The product line includes Te Tao Hair, a line of shampoos, conditioners and treatment products, and Te Tao Body, a line of body scrubs, cleansers and lotions.
Te Tao Hair includes five shampoo and conditioner combinations: Ginseng Tea Tonic, Lemongrass Tea Shine, Lotus Tea Thickening, Jasmine Tea Calming and Bamboo Tea Soothing. Each formula corresponds to the five Chinese elements: fire, earth, water, metal and wood. They are currently available in 8.4-ounce sizes for a suggested retail price of $4.99.
Te Tao Body includes a wide variety of products that contain ingredients such as seaweed, Chinese rose, lotus seed and schizandra. The line includes Chinese Rose & Mother of Pearl Body Lotion, Schizandra & Peppermint Sea Salt Smoother and Wild Rice & Oatmeal Body Scrub. The products retail for $5.99 to $14.95.
The White Rain Company will begin distribution of Te Tao in April 2002.
