The dangers of too much UV radiation have been in the news for years. Consumers are urged to stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., bundle up in protective clothing and slather on copious amounts of sunscreen. All these warnings, however, havent made a dent in the incidence of skin cancer. So Playtex Products, the manufacturer of the Banana Boat line of sun care products is taking a different tack for 2004. Company executives insist this is the year to celebrate the sun.
Consumers are always told to stay out of the sun, observed Parker Gilbert, vice president of marketing, Banana Boat. But people love the sun; they have a primal relationship with it. Sunshine makes them feel better.
Mr. Gilbert isnt suggesting that consumers go outdoors unprotected. In fact, at a Jan. 13 press conference in New York City, the company rolled out their new products for 2004, Were (just) encouraging people to live their lives, he said.
To further promote the benefits of sunlight, Banana Boat has enlisted Michael Holich, a doctor with the Boston University Medical Center who recently published a book entitled, The UV Advantage. Dr. Holich noted that sunlight helps regulate melatonin and serotonin levels, compounds that are crucial to helping people feel good. In addition, sunlight is crucial to vitamin D production. Without it, folks would have to drink 10 glasses of milk a day to get the necessary amount of vitamin D they need.
Still, protection from UV damage is critical and the new products from Banana Boat provide plenty of protection. For example, new Surf Sunblock SPF 30 is said to provide a waterproof shield for instant sun protection that lasts for up to eight hours. The product is based on a unique water-in-silicone emulsion formula called Aquashield H20. According to Barbara Donovan, head of research and development at Banana Boat, this novel emulsion provides instant protection so consumers dont have to wait 15 minutes before venturing out into the sun.
Another new product is Banana Boat Kids UVA and UVB sunblock lotion SPF 50. It boasts an anti-burn system that provides kids with waterproof, sweatproof and hypoallergenic skin protection. Quick Dry Sport Spray SPF 30 is an oil-free, clear liquid spray thats easy to apply and doesnt leave skin or hands greasy.
Finally, Banana Boat expanded its Suntanicals Collection to include SPF 30 lotion and aftersun lotion. The products include aloe vera, chamomile and lavender.
With an array of new products and a healthy attitude about sun protection, Banana Boat executives are confident that 2004 will be a good yearprovided the weather cooperates.
It rained just about every weekend on the East Coast last year and made everybody miserable, recalled Mr. Gilbert. In 2004, the weather has to be better.
