ICMAD Announces Young Designer Winners

The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors Association (ICMAD) announced the three winners of the organization’s 2002 Young Designers competition.

Winners were honored during an open board of directors meeting and dinner, which was held on Oct. 15 in New York City.

Tammy Teehan, a Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) student, placed first and was awarded $2500 for her Blue Goo styling gel.

The second place winner was Jessica Weber, a student at the Columbus College of Art, OH, for her Soothe Relaxation package; she was awarded $1500. James Vondra of the American Academy of Art, Chicago, took third place and received $1000 for his UVShield sun block.

The panel of judges included Jerome Berard of Berard Associates, New York; Allen Burke of QVC; Geoffrey Donaldson of The Sea Change Group; Annette Green, The Fragrance Foundation; Gregg Lukasiewicz, Lukasiewicz Design and Kenneth Noskin. Criteria for issuing the awards included uniqueness, ability to be reproduced economically and ease of use and storage.

The Young Designers competition was instituted by ICMAD in 1999. It showcases student talent in personal care packaging design. The goal of the honor is to encourage and develop young cretaive talent that will help build the future of the cosmetics industry, ICMAD executives said.

“The ICMAD Young Designers competition attracts schools with some of the finest design departments in the country,” commented Ian Ginsberg of Bigelow Trading Ltd., and ICMAD president. “The work of all the students in our competition proves there will be considerable talent avvailable to the cosmetics industry in the future.” Schools which participated in the competition included The American Academy of Art, Chicago; Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, OH; Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), New York; Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Los Angeles and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL.
