Fewer than a dozen global producers of primary surfactants remain after more than a decade of consolidation in the industry, according to Colin A. Houston & Associates’ (CAHA) Surfactant developments—forecast to 2010 study. Worldwide consumption of surfactants is expected to increase 3% annually to reach 14.3 million tons in 2010. The Brewster, NY-based consulting firm also noted that methyl ester sulfonate (MES) is rapidly replacing linear alkylbenzene sulfonate.
“The restructuring of supply is an important factor, but the market is also having to contend with over capacity issues, new surfactants being developed, the increasing impact of environmental regulation and changes in the product value chain,” said Joel Houston, president of CAHA.
