CHINA: Many Chinese cities have already banned the use of phosphorus detergents and more are expected to do so in the near future, according to industry experts. China is expected to completely ban the environmentally unfriendly substance by 2005.
According to studies, approximately 50% of phosphorus found in domestic waste water comes from phosphorus, which is used in cleaning compounds such as detergents. Contaminated water creates favorable conditions for blue-green algae and has been linked to “the red tide” and fish deaths, experts claim.
