Goldschmidt Chemical celebrated the expansion of its Hopewell, VA site with a March 27 dedication ceremony at the new Sales, Marketing & Technology Center. The new facility serves textile care, personal care and other businesses. In addition to marketing and sales offices, new product application laboratories account for 8,000 sq. ft. of the 33,000-sq.-ft. building and serve the development and application needs of Goldschmidt, Degussa’s wholly-owned subsidiary.
More than 70 guests, including customers and key members of the Hopewell community, such as Mayor James Patterson, turned out to congratulate Goldschmidt’s management and staff. “I want to extend my congratulations on behalf of city council, the city administration and the citizens. The city is proud to have you as a partner,” said Mr. Patterson.
Following remarks made by distinguished guests, Dr. Reinhold Brand, president of Goldschmidt Chemical Corporation, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests were taken on a tour of the new laboratory facilities.
According to Dr. Brand, “In addition to strengthening our organization in a highly competitive market, the consolidation of these operations at the new Sales, Marketing & Technology Center has made it possible for both the care specialties and oligomers & silicones business units to provide truly integrated services to our clients.” He added, “The opening of these new laboratories and administrative offices ensures that Goldschmidt Chemical continues to provide the value-added service and product quality our customers have come to expect, while at the same time establishing our commitment to Hopewell and the surrounding communities.”
The care specialties business unit in Hopewell, which includes the personal care business line, markets raw materials, additives and active ingredients primarily to the skin care, hair care and home care industries. Known for providing comprehensive, world-leading, market-oriented solutions, the business unit’s expertise in interfacial chemistry and formulation performance additives make Degussa and Goldschmidt the world leader in organomodified silicones and oleochemicals. Some of the products manufactured by the personal care business line include Tegosoft DEC and Tego Sun TAQ 40, which will be spotlighted at the SCC Supplier’s Day this month.
Tegosoft DEC is a unique emollient that was developed for use in light, non-oily skin care products. It improves the spreadability of o/w and w/o emulsions, and boasts very low viscosity and high spreadability; easy emulsification; good solvency for crystalline actives and a very low pour point. It is ideal for skin and sun care sprays, foams, creams, and lotions.
Tego Sun TAQ 40, which makes its North American debut at the SCC Supplier’s Day, is the company’s first high solids aqueous dispersion of microfine hydrophobically-modified titanium dioxide, which is characterized by a narrow particle size distribution. The low viscosity and the thixotropic flow behavior guarantee good pumpability, high storage stability, and easy processability. Tego Sun TAQ 40 is preservative-free and finds applications in daily wear lotions, sunscreens and sun protection for children.
Degussa will highlight its Aerosil line at Supplier’s Day as well. In particular, new base formulations and samples will be on display. According to John Christiano, Aerosil marketing manager for personal care and cosmetics, “We hope to make it easier for formulators to recognize the applications for our silica products. In effect, we’re saying, ‘these are the personal care and cosmetics products that can benefit from our materials, these are our starting formulations and here are
