In 1986, Dow, Midland, MI, introduced its Waste Reduction Al- ways Pays (WRAP) award program. The program now goes beyond reduction, reuse and recycling, to reprocessing waste into raw materials. The new focus of the WRAP awards is aided by two co-sponsors: the Environmental Technology center and the Environmental Operating business of Dow. The groups offer by-products of Dow’s manufacturing operations as raw materials for other businesses.
Since the inception of the awards, Dow has recognized 395 projects and reduced 230,000 tons of waste, 13 million tons of wastewater and eight trillion BTUs of energy, executives said.
