Executives from Federated Merchandising said sales picked up in the last days before Christmas, surpassing the stores’ estimated fragrance and color sales for the period. The brands with the greatest revenues before Christmas included Estée Lauder, Clinique and Lancôme, according to reports. In the women’s scent category, Beyond Paradise, Ralph Lauren Blue, Burberry Brit and Still Jennifer Lopez fared well, as did men’s fragrances Kenneth Cole Black and Aramis Life. Flanker fragrances such as Elizabeth Ardens’ Red Door Revealed and Elizabeth Taylor’s Gardenia also experienced robust sales. Some retailers said sales after Christmas were also strong across the board in the prestige sector.
In the mass market category, sales also improved from the past couple of years. A Walgreens executive said sales were up in November and December in beauty, fragrances and cosmetics. Notable fragrance sellers in several mass retailers included Coty’s Celine Dion, Adidas, Stetson and other brands in both new and classic forms. Several gift sets were in demand, including a Crayola-licensed soap set and Calgon, The Healing Garden, Revlon, Markwins and New Dana Perfumes gift sets.
