Social Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery

A nationwide survey released released at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual meeting revealed that cosmetic surgery is gaining acceptance among Americans. According to the results of the survey, 91% of Americans said that cosmetic surgery has become more socially acceptable within the past five years, and 58% have a favorable view of cosmetic surgery.
A variety of factors add to the appeal of cosmetic surgery for Americans, according to the poll. Respondents cited less pain (37%), shortened recovery time (35%) and minimized scarring (39%) as favorable characteristics of the latest technological advances in cosmetic surgery.
“Apprehension about cosmetic surgery lessens when people are more educated about surgical and technological advancements,” said Susan Downey, M.D., F.A.C.S., associate professor of plastic surgery, U.S.C. Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles.
