Media for teens has seen more fragmentation and alternatives in the past five years than ever before, according to a study by The Zandl Group, New York, NY. Teen girls use a full range of media, including TV, music, internet and magazines. Entertainment is the usual topic of conversation of 26% of teen girls, which is up over 40% from five years ago.
“Friends” was the favorite show of 22% of teen girls, followed by MTV and “The Simpsons.” Rap, rock and R&B are the most popular music genres. The survey revealed teen girls buy their favorite movies so they can enjoy them whenever they’re in the mood to do so. Action flicks are popular, and movies with cool soundtracks are also shoe-ins. Teens’ favorite actors and actresses include Josh Hartnett, Vin Diesel, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie.
The purchasing of teen magazines has fallen dramatically during the past five years, down 46%. Girls will continue to make the internet a more integral part of their lives. Seventy-six percent of teen girls have a favorite website and 25% bought something online in the past year. The web is the preferred way to check out everything from TV and concert listings to clothing sales, The Zandl Group reported.
