SDA Awards Educators of Healthy Living

November 22, 2005

This year’s Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) “Clean Homes…Healthy Families” award of excellence was presented to educators who promote the connection between cleanliness and health. Susan White-Sayers and Diane Mason of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service in Newport were honored for developing an indoor air quality workshop for childcare providers, who learned about proper cleaning and disinfection practices. In a follow-up survey of workshop participants, 83% of the childcare professionals said they had changed their methods of cleaning as a result of the information they received.
Montgomery County, MD Cooperative Extension Service educators Dianne Miller, Cassandra Corridon and Madeleine Greene were also honored by SDA for creating programs which helped nearly 20,000 residents improve food safety and sanitation practices following large outbreaks of food-related illnesses at local church suppers. Team members trained commercial vendors, restaurant workers, childcare workers, teachers, school foodservice workers, and camp and fair workers on proper hygiene and cleaning practices.
