THE PHILIPPINES: Reinhard A. Schellner, general manager of SC Johnson & Son, Inc. in the Philippines, announced that it is locally manufacturing household cleaning product Mr. Muscle. Introduced in the Philippines last year, Mr. Muscle is well-known in Europe, but is a relative newcomer in Asia.
According to Mr. Schellner, SC Johnson, the Philippines produces, through a tolling operation, all of its Baygon, Off!, Johnson, Toilet Duck and Mr. Muscle products in that country. It also produces some of its Raid, Glade and most of its Bay Fresh products there. However, it still imports all of its Pledge products.
SC Johnson is already exporting some of its Off! products produced in the Philippines to Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam. One big hurdle, however, is the relatively small Philippine domestic market. Without a strong domestic base, Mr. Schellner acknowledged, the company may have some difficulty in making the Philippines a regional center for manufacturing household products.
