1Q Profits Dip

Estée Lauder’s first-quarter earnings fell less than 1% as revenue in most categories rose but fragrance sales slipped. First quarter income totaled $58.3 million.
Revenue gained 6% to $1.59 billion. Skin care sales grew 8% to $567 million, while makeup sales grew 7% to $646.8 million. Fragrance sales slipped 1% to $289.3 million on lower sales of Estée Lauder Beyond Paradise and various Clinique and Tommy Hilfiger fragrances, while hair care sales grew 16% to $82.4 million.
Skin care, makeup and fragrance results felt the effect of fewer department store during the quarter due to Federated Department Stores Inc. acquisition of May Department Stores Co. last year.
