North Castle Sells HDS Cosmetics and Avalon

February 16, 2007

The Procter & Gamble Company has ac-quired HDS Cosmetics Lab Inc., the company that manufactures and markets Doctor’s Dermatologic Formula (DDF) skin care, from North Castle Partners, a private equity firm. A purchase price was not disclosed. The DDF line of products targets specific skin concerns such as anti-aging, acne and hyperpigmentation.

Building on DDF’s positioning and credentials, P&G expects to infuse the line with innovation, add marketing initiatives and leverage its global reach and go-to-market capability to drive expansion. DDF is sold in specialty retail and department stores and select spas throughout the U.S. and several other countries.

In a similar move, North Castle sold its Avalon natural products business, which includes the Avalon Organics and Alba Botanica brands to Hain Celestial Group. A purchase price was not disclosed.

Avalon, a leader in the natural products category in terms of skin care, hair care, bath and body and sun care is expected to boost Hain Celestial’s presence in personal care. The acquisition is set to complement the existing brands from Hain Celestial, which include Jason, Zia Natural Skin Care and Queen Helene.

North Castle is a private equity firm focused exclusively on consumer businesses that benefit from healthy living and aging trends.
