JAPAN: Shiseido Co. has developed technology for producing hyaluronic acid with less than one-1,000th the molecular weight of conventional products, according to Nikkei Weekly.
The supershort hyaluronic acid molecule has two repeats of glucuronic acid and glucosamine and a molecular weight of around 800. The company achieved this result by using measuring and analysis techniques cultivated in its cosmetics business to accurately sever the bonds in the hyaluronic acid chain.
Shiseido will soon begin shipping the product to drugmakers for clinical trials and aims to begin full sales of the product as a pharmaceutical ingredient in three years.
