UNITED KINGDOM: A new report from Retail Analysts Verdict Research, part of the Datamonitor Group, reveals that the battle for UK grocery market share has become more intense than ever. Despite the concern that UK shoppers may lack a choice of food retailers, Verdict Research finds that competition in the sector is flourishing.

According to the report, contrary to popular belief, it is not just the largest players that are growing their market share; many second tier supermarket operators are also gaining ground, as are hard discounters such as Aldi and Lidl.

Tesco still recorded both the largest market share gain among the leading players and, due to its size, by far the highest monetary gain in sales.
