According to Wal-Mart’s Live Better Index, there has been growing consumer demand for green products at the nation’s largest discount retailer. Products in the index are selected products because consumers can make a conscious decision to purchase them for their environmental and cost-saving benefits versus other products in the same category. For the index, Wal-Mart tracks “adoption rates,” which are sales of those select products as compared to other products in the category. According to the company, concentrated/reduced-packaging liquid laundry detergents showed an average adoption rate of 76.3% up from 22.86% in 2007. Wal-Mart began a nationwide transition to sell only concentrated liquid laundry detergent in October 2007 as part of its commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative, which contributed to the increased adoption rate. To reflect the growing consumer preference for eco-friendly products, Wal-Mart has started to track additional product categories including eco-friendly cleaning products. More info: www. walmart.com
