SCC Membership Numbers Rise

As of May 31, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) had a total membership and affiliation of 4,183, an increase of 1% over 2007. The total includes 3,247 general members, 584 national affiliates, 261 emeritus members, three honorary members, 38 retired members, 40 student members and 10 junior members, according to SCC. General membership is available to persons engaged in scientific or technical work in the cosmetics and toiletries industry or in related governmental or academic areas, who have earned a bachelor’s degree in the chemical, physical, medical, pharmaceutical, biological or related sciences and technology. In addition, those working in a technical capacity within the industry for at least five years, who have completed two years in a recognized related academic program are eligible, as those who may lack sufficient academic background, but who have worked in a technical capacity in the cosmetic science industry for at least 10 years.

National affiliation is available to those interested in the objectives of SCC, but not qualified for general membership. National affiliates are entitled to all membership privileges, except that they may not vote or hold elected office within SCC or its chapters. Junior membership is available to those under 26 years of age who hold appropriate degrees in science, who are matriculated science students in at least their third year of undergraduate studies, and who work in a scientific or technical capacity in the cosmetic industry.

Student membership is open to fully matriculated students in a scientific program at recognized colleges and universities. Both junior and students members are entitled to all membership privileges, except that they may not vote or hold elected office.
