Dye-Containing Pellets Patented by Wella AG


U.S. Patent No. 7,458,992 B2: Wella AG, Darmstadt, Germany, has been awarded a U.S. patent covering a coated dye-containing pellet for coloring keratin fibers. It is comprised of a dye-containing pellet and a coating material that coats the dye-containing pellet. The dye-containing pellet contains a carrier material and from 0.1-70% by weight of at least one oxidation dye precursor, and at least one oxidation dye precursor is uniformly mixed in the carrier material.

Hydroscopic Polymer Gels Patented by Clorox

U.S. Patent No. 7,470,290 B2: The Clorox Company has patented a method of forming a hydroscopic polymer gel on a surface for easier cleaning. The method entails applying a water soluble or water dispersible polymer to the surface to form a layer of the polymer on the surface; and allowing water to be sequestered to the layer to form the polymer gel, wherein the polymer gel is not visible and has a thickness that ranges from 0.1-500nm to protect the surface against wetting by oil. The polymer is comprised of a water soluble or water dispersible copolymer having: a first monomer that is acidic and that is capable of forming an anionic charge; a second monomer that is an amphipathic monomer that contains at least one hydrophobic moiety and at least one hydrophilic moiety which together define the amphipathic monomer; and optionally, a third monomer that is hydrophobic; and optionally, a fourth monomer that has a permanent cationic charge or that is capable of forming a cationic charge on protonation.

Clear Conditioning Compositions

U.S. Patent No. 7,470,651 B2: Procter & Gamble Company has been awarded a patent for a translucent or transparent conditioning composition. It is comprised of, by weight, 0.1-5.0% of a surfactant system comprising a cationic surfactant and a nonionic surfactant; 0.1-5.0% of the polymer selected from the group consisting of an anionic polymer, an amphoteric polymer, and mixtures thereof; an aqueous carrier; 0.05-5.0% of a nonionic thickening polymer being substantially soluble in the composition; 0.1-20% of a conditioning agent comprising a silicone compound being a hydrophobically modified amido silicone copolyol; and 0.1-20% of a co-solvent. The surfactant system and the polymer form a water-insoluble complex upon dilution. The composition is substantially free of substantially insoluble oily compounds and has a transmittance of 25% or more.

Nail Varnish from L’Oréal

U.S. Patent No. 7,455,831 B2: L’Oréal S.A., Paris, has been awarded a U.S. patent covering a nail varnish that is comprised of, in a cosmetically acceptable medium, at least one film-forming polymer that is soluble in an organic solvent in an amount greater than 90% by weight at 25°C. The nail varnish composition is capable of forming a film having a rate of mass loss of less than 0.5 mg/minute when the film is subjected to abrasion produced with a Taber abrasimeter at 23°C.

Reckitt’s on the Prowl for Product Ideas

Reckitt Benckiser is looking for a few good ideas. The company has updated its so-called innovation center, RB-Idealink, to search for more technologies and products.  The new site now contains a targeted list of the firm’s “most wanted” technology needs, and enables inventors to make proposals directly to the firm in seven languages.
The maker of products such as Airwick, Vanish, Woolite and Clearasil contends a constant stream of new ideas and inventions is essential to its success. In fact, 40% of its recent sales have come from products launched in the last three years. 
“Our success and the way we operate means that Reckitt Benckiser is a great partner for new ideas—and what is more, we believe we can get great ideas working and in the consumer’s hands quickly and efficiently—it is what we are good at,” Rakesh Kapoor, Reckitt Benckiser executive vice president, category development, said in a statement.
RB-Idealink, which was created in 2006, covers three major areas of innovation: new technologies, new products and brand licensing. Reckitt contends it provides an easy way for inventors and potential partners to bring their inventions or products to the company safe in the knowledge that they will get a fast response and proper support if the idea is taken up by the company.
“New technologies can give us strong competitive advantage in our products, as well as strengthening our overall technology base for future product development,” said Richard Ellis, senior vice president, global R&D.
The website also includes case studies about how new ideas and expertise have contributed to current Reckitt Benckiser products, such as Airwick Freshmatic Mini and Finish Quantum.
