EMD Chemicals, Merck Celebrate Milestones

Pigments have evolved significantly over the last 50 years. EMD Chemicals and its global affiliate, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, are celebrating two important milestones this year: a 50th anniversary in the effect pigment industry and 30 years of manufacturing pigments in EMD’s Savannah, GA facility.

Here's a look at raw mica in a rotary kiln.
For 50 years, effect pigments have been a part of the Merck product portfolio. In 1959, production of pigments sold under the brand name Iriodin began at its facility in Gernsheim, Germany. Within a few years, the company rose to become a global manufacturer of pearl luster pigments. This was the beginning of what would become a legacy of quality and innovation for the development and production of effect pigments.

Through the acquisition of the Rona Pearl division (bismuth oxide chloride pigments and natural fish silver) from the Whittaker Corporation in the U.S. in 1975, the company took its first step into the most important cosmetics market in the world. To gain market proximity, five years later, in 1980, a facility was established in Savannah, GA for production, research and application technology.

Today, EMD Chemicals and Merck represent a leading manufacturer of decorative and functional effect pigments used in printing, plastics, cosmetics, coatings, electrical conductivity, laser marking and energy management as well as brand and product protection.
