CSPA Questions Validity Of Recent Candle Study
The Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) is questioning the scientific validity and conclusions of a study alleging that paraffin candles release harmful amounts of indoor air pollutants. According to CSPA, the results and assertions of the researchers are in stark contrast to earlier studies and contradict the overwhelming body of scientific data on the topic.
In 2007, an international consortium sponsored a large-scale study that analyzed the combustion products of candles made from several waxes including soy wax, beeswax and paraffin for more than 300 chemicals known or suspected of toxicity or other health effects. This study demonstrated that the combustion products from all of the waxes were virtually identical in both composition and quantity.
All candles produced combustion products at levels far below the most conservative indoor-air standards. This international study clearly demonstrated that all waxes burned cleanly and safely, which is in direct contrast with the results and conclusion of South Carolina State University researchers.

Global Fragrance Group to Publish List of Ingredients by End of 2009
The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) will publish a list of fragrance ingredients being used in consumer goods on its website, www.ifraorg.org, by Dec. 31, 2009.According to IFRA, it decided that its initiative “will supplement the fragrance industry’s overall safety program communication and respond to the changing marketplace where consumers are seeking more information about the ingredients in the products they use safely in their everyday lives.”
The list will be generated from the IFRA 2008 Use Survey, which is conducted on a regular basis among IFRA member companies.
The IFRA initiative enhances the CSPA, CCSPA and SDA Consumer Product Ingredient Communication Initiative where manufacturers of cleaning products, air care products, automotive care products and polishes and floor maintenance products will voluntarily disclose ingredients in these products by Jan. 1, 2010.
CSPA, CCSPA and SDA applaud the fragrance industry for taking the initiative to communicate more information about the fragrance ingredients present in consumer products. This move complements the CSPA, CCSPA and SDA Initiative by further expanding its scope.
