Paris Court Favors LVMH in eBay Case



FRANCE: The Paris Commercial Court has ruled in favor of Parfums Christian Dior, Givenchy, Guerlain and Kenzo, and subsequently has fined eBay for the unlawful marketing of Christian Dior, Kenzo, Givenchy and Guerlain perfumes.

Through the judgment, the court has stated that unlawful advertisements using the brand names Christian Dior, Kenzo, Givenchy or Guerlain have continued to be posted on the eBay site. The court ordered eBay to pay penalties amounting to approximately $2.5 million.

This judgment follows a June 2008 ruling by the Paris Commercial Court, which required eBay to stop French users from buying or selling authentic LVMH perfume products on any eBay site in the world. Further to payment of damages, the court ordered eBay to discontinue its illegal practices, according to a statement from LVMH.

Lumene Sponsors ISU Skating Championships



ESTONIA: Lumene, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month, has been named an official sponsor of the ISU European Figure Skating Championships 2010, which will be held in Tallinn, Estonia, Jan. 18-24.The event will attract approximately 50,000 visitors from various countries, and the championships will also be televised throughout Europe. In addition, the Nordic beauty brand has tapped figure skater Kiira Korpi for its winter marketing material.

Wacker Metroark Celebrates 10th Anniversary in India



INDIA: Wacker Metroark Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. The Kolkata, India-based company was set up in 1998 as a joint venture between Wacker and Metroark Ltd. in India and started operations in 1999. With a workforce of more than 130, the JV produces and distributes silicones for personal care applications as well as construction and automotive sectors. Overseeing all sales and marketing activities concerning silicone products on the Indian subcontinent, Wacker Metroark hasexperienced above-average growth exceeding 20%, according to Wacker, which has a 51% stake in the operation.

Cognis Showcases Solutions at SCS Formulate 2009

At SCS Formulate 2009, Cognis presented its range of new solutions, including emulsifiers, high-performance polymers, emulsions, dispersions and suggested formulations that allow manufacturers to meet consumers’ increasing demand for natural products that make them look and feel good. For example, an anionic O/W emulsifier, Eumulgin Prisma, which is made primarily from natural ingredients, is highly effective even at low concentrations, and is easy to incorporate into formulations. It is suitable for a wide variety of applications. In particular, its excellent compatibility with electrolytes and pigments makes it ideal for use in sun care products, the company said.

Also on display was Cosmedia Triple C, a PEG/EO-free dispersion polymer, representing a new generation of liquid cationic polymers for care products with excellent sensory properties. Avon’s Witherspoon at UK’s House of Commons To Combat Abuse



UNITED KINGDOM: Reese Witherspoon, Avon’s global ambassador, headlined a press conference at the UK’s House of Commons on Dec. 3, 2009 to promote a new campaign against domestic violence. The campaign, which has been launched jointly by Avon Cosmetics and Refuge, a national domestic violence charity, calls for more government support for women experiencing domestic violence in the UK.

The event marked the mid-point in“16 Days of Activism,”which began on Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Also joining Witherspoon at the event were Anna Segatti, president of Avon UK, Sandra Horley, chief executive officer of Refuge, Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, a human rights barrister and patron of Refuge, and domestic violence survivor Wendy Turner Webster.

The campaign seeks consumer support in several ways, including buying and wearing an Avon empowerment necklace and signing a petition calling for the UK Government to provide more support services for abused women and children.

Symrise Acquires Futura Labs



EGYPT: Symrise has acquired Futura Labs Group, a flavors and fragrances manufacturer in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Privately held Futura Labs Group, which is headquartered in Cairo, has development and production facilities in Cairo as well as a recently established production facility in Dubai.

With this acquisition, Symrise expands its footprint in several large and attractive markets in this region. The product portfolio and client list of Futura Labs are an excellent fit with the existing operations of Symrise in Egypt, the company said.

LG Household & Healthcare Acquires TheFaceShop



SOUTH KOREA: Asian private equity house Affinity Equity Partners has sold TheFaceShop, a South Korean maker of lower-price cosmetics, to LG Household & Healthcare for $364 million. LG Household & Healthcare, the country’s No. 2 cosmetics company, said in a statement that it had acquired 90% of TheFaceShop for approximately $363.5 million, including a 70.2% stake held by Affinity.

LG Household & Healthcare said the purchase was made to strengthen its competitiveness in the middle- to low-end of the market with an eye toward teens and customers in their early 20s.

Kanebo Builds Name in China, Plans Sensai Spas in Europe



CHINA: Kanebo wants to build up its stature in China, and to do so has been sponsoring beauty contests hosted by local women’s magazines.

According to a report in the Nikkei Weekly, Kanebo collaborated with leading Chinese magazines, including those published by Rayli Group, by sponsoring contests to select cover girls.

In articles used to solicit models and at auditions, Kanebo’s products were advertised to project an image of high fashion and high-end cosmetics.

Rayli holds exclusive Chinese distribution rights to Japanese magazines called Ray and Classy.

In other news, Kanebo plans to open new spa facilities in luxury hotels in Europe as a way to boost sales of its Sensai line of high-end skin care products. The first European Sensai Select Spa was scheduled to open by the end of 2009 in Switzerland.

Sustainable Cosmetics Summit Held in Germany



GERMANY: The Sustainable Cosmetics Summit, held in Frankfurt, Germany, Nov. 16-17, brought together some of the leading organizations involved in sustainability in the beauty industry, with participants coming from Europe, North and Latin America, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, according to show organizers, Organic Monitor.

The summit, which focused on various facets of sustainability, including eco-labels and standards, ethical sourcing, fair trade concepts, biodiversity and green formulations, was opened by an address by George Korres, founder and chief executive officer Korres Natural Products.

Other speakers included Stephen Johnson, sustainable development manager of Boots, and Bernhard Bauske, head of corporate strategy at WWF, among others.

Interactive workshops, with case studies featuring Aveda, Dr. Hauschka and Jurlique, were also held during the summit.

The North American edition of the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit will take place March 25-26 in New York.

Amway China Forges Deal With China Telecom



CHINA: Amway China has signed an agreement with China Telecom to provide its salespeople with 3G phones with special online product and sales functions. The agreement will let eligible Amway salespeople obtain custom-made smart phones with several functions including online shopping, sales queries, customer management and makeup simulation. Amway China has 300,000 sales staff in its network.
