SCC Courses To Focus On Rheology, Preservatives

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has unveiled its schedule of education courses for 2011, and first up are classes addressing rheology and preservation.

SCC’s course on cosmetic rheology will be held Jan. 25, 2011 at the Sheraton Newark Airport Hotel in Newark, NJ. The objective of this course is to provide a practical understanding of the principles behind cosmetic flow, how it is measured and why it has become an integral part of cosmetic formulating. The class will also examine rheological additives and the profiles of commercially successful products.

The instructor of this one-day course is Dennis Laba, director of technical marketing for personal care ingredients at Presperse, Inc. He has 32 years experience in the cosmetic industry.

On Feb. 9, SCC will hold course on preservatives. Held at the Newark Airport Hotel, this course will deal with the requirements to manufacture microbiologically acceptable cosmetics. Included will be the FDA regulations on the adequacy of preservation of cosmetics; regulations of preservatives in the EU, Canada, Japan and Mexico; and the chemistry and use of preservatives and other ingredients such as antioxidants, chelating agents and UV absorbers to maintain product integrity. There will also be information presented on preserving your product without using traditional preservatives.

The class instructor is David Steinberg, founder of Steinberg & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm for the cosmetic industry. Steinberg has also taught cosmetic chemistry at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
