Innovative Natural Ingredients from Extracts & Ingredients
• Cosmetic chemists from throughout the Northeastern U.S. attended a cosmetics seminar sponsored by Extracts & Ingredients in April to learn more about several naturally-derived raw materials that can help formulators create novel products. For example, Kalident (calcium hydroxyapatite) provides a range of benefits in oral hygiene. It imparts natural remineralization of subsurface and dental enamel, removes plaque without being abrasive, whitens enamel without relying on chemical and abrasive artificial treatment, repairs and reverses dental microlesions and reduces dental hypersensitivity.
Another functional hydroxyapatite, Apalight, has applications in sun care formulations. This skin-friendly, micro-dispersed mineral active enhances UV protection with a performance that is comparable or even superior to TiO2, according to the company. Moreover, it imparts soft-focus effects to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Extracts & Ingredients also offers Kalinat (sodium DNA), an anti-wrinkle active that increases skin moisture levels, elasticity and skin thickness, while reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
For those interested in formulating hair loss treatments, there’s Stimucap, a material derived from conjugated linoleic acid, glutathione and sodium DNA. In a 30-day trial involving 30 volunteers, Stimucap outperformed Minoxidil in hair resistance and hair loss tests. At the same time, Stimucap was well-tolerated by test subjects.
Unique Emulsifiers
• For those looking for functional ingredients for their personal care formulations, Extracts & Ingredients offers the Olivoil family of products, which includes surfactants and emulsifiers, as well as two actives (Olivoil PCA and olive milk). The emulsifier is compatible with vegetable oils, mineral oils, esters, silicones, sunscreens, pigments and a wide range of active ingredients. At 3-5% use levels, it creates a fluid emulsion, and at 5-10% it creates a thick emulsion. At the same time, it leaves a smooth, soft skin feel; improves skin compactness; reduces redness of irritated skin, reduces TEWL and increases elasticity, according to the company.
Olivoil Avenate surfactant (INCI: Potassium olivoyl hydrolyzed oat protein) is PEG-free, 100% vegetal, non-irritating to skin and eyes and highly biodegradable. The material contains oat, rather than wheat, protein to impart a silky feel on skin.
