Robert Lochhead Honored with Chemical Pioneer Award

Long-time cosmetic industry expert Robert Y. Lochhead has received the American Institute of Chemists’ Chemical Pioneer Award. He was presented with the honor at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia on April 13. Lochhead was recognized for his accomplishments in the field of polymer science and engineering. He has decades of accomplishments, but his most recent work includes new dispersants and absorbents to treat oil spills. In other areas, he and his team is continuing research on polymer-surfactant coacervates—that’s what makes 2-in-1 shampoos work and it is called the “Lochhead Effect.” He is also planning to work on nanostructured “smart” surfaces—”if our most recent proposal is funded,” he added.

Despite his many personal accomplishments, Lochhead noted that his proudest achievements revolve around his students, several of whom went on to receive their PhD and post-doctorate work.

“Of course, I am proud of my family,” noted Lochhead. “It is wonderful to go out with my wife when a people comes up to her and thank her for getting them through math—and that happens a lot. My wife was (and still is) an excellent instructor and has the patience of a saint. I am also very, very proud of my daughters—one is the manager of supply chain logistics finance for Quaker and the other was the chief scientist on the research vessel that sailed from Bermuda,” he said.

Lochhead’s industrial career spanned 25 years with stints at some of the industry’s biggest names—Unilever and BFGoodrich—all before he took on his best-known post at the helm of one of the most significant US programs in polymer science at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Having joined USM as an associate professor in 1990, he is currently director of the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials. In addition, Lochhead served as president of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) in 1994 and 2010 and president of the International Association of Formulation Chemists in 2000. He was the 2000 recipient of the Maison G. De Navarre Medal; the highest honor in the Arts and Sciences of Cosmetics, and also the SCC National Merit Award, 2006.Lochhead also serves on the International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients Committee.

The author of approximately 300 scientific papers, Lochhead has conducted a monumental amount of work in the field of polymer/surfactant interactions. In fact, Lochhead has played a role in the development of some of the marketplace’s best-known product forms. For example, he developed a rheology modifier for the stabilization of antidandruff and silicone conditioning shampoos. He was named an inventor in US Patents 5,820,695 and 6,007,769 for precise nanostructured liquid crystals used in Liquid Drano that were invented jointly at USM and SC Johnson Wax. He also managed the team that developed the polymeric binder and rheology modifier for Crest toothpaste and invented polymeric emulsifiers (acrylates/C10-C30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer)—a new class of compounds that made possible skin lotions for sensitive skin and agricultural sprays. He also led the team that developed poly (acrylic acid) thickeners for hypochlorite bleach with the desired chemical resistance and rheological profile, which made possible the now familiar liquid gel automatic dishwash products.

Zerran Moves to New HQ
Zerran International Corporation, maker of professional wet lines and specialty in-salon treatments, is marking its 26th year by moving into a new corporate headquarters. The move to 40,000 square feet of an integrated office, education center, warehousing and shipping space, which effectively triples the company’s capabilities. Adding in existing laboratory and manufacturing areas, Zerran’s facilities now encompass nearly 200,000 square feet in its entirety, according to the firm

Henkel Sells Coast, Soft & Dri, LA Looks and More

Henkel has sold several of its personal care brands, including Coast, L.A. Looks, Dep Sport and Soft & Dri deodorant.

High Ridge Brands, which is based in Stamford, CT and is majority-owned by Brynwood VI, has acquired the global rights to the Coast personal cleansing brand from The Dial Corporation, a subsidiary of the Henkel group. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

In a simultaneous transaction, Newhall Laboratories has acquired the rights to the L.A. Looks, Dep Sport, Zero Frizz and Thicker Fuller Hair portfolio of hair care brands, the Soft & Dri female deodorant brand and the Pure & Natural liquid hand soap and body wash brand. Newhall is part of Brynwood Partners VI L.P.’s Gold Sun Inc. portfolio company, which is based in Santa Clarita, CA.

Originally launched in 1975, Coast is a personal cleansing brand and known as “The Eye Opener” for awakening users through an invigorating and refreshing early morning shower experience. Coast is available in both bar soaps (Pacific Force and Arctic Boost) and body washes (Pacific Force and Urban Fuel). Coast products are widely distributed in the US through leading retailers in the food, drug, mass and dollar channels.

High Ridge Brands was formed by Brynwood VI in January 2011 to purchase the North American Zest personal cleansing brand from The Procter & Gamble Company. In August 2011, High Ridge Brands acquired the US and Puerto Rico brand and marketing rights to the Alberto VO5 brand and the worldwide marketing and brand rights to the Rave brand.

In just over a year, High Bridge “has created a leading personal care company with well-known consumer brands including Zest, Alberto VO5, Rave and now Coast. We will continue to manage our investment by growing all of these brands through renewed marketing and product innovation,” said Dario Margve, managing Partner of Brynwood VI and chairman of High Ridge Brands.

“We believe that, in particular, the L.A. Looks and Dep Sport businesses will greatly complement our La Bella hair care brand,” added Margve. “The remaining acquired brands have loyal consumer followings and will greatly benefit from the renewed attention that our company will provide to the sales and marketing efforts.”

In its 28-year history, Brynwood Partners has acquired 30 corporate brands from 13 different corporate sellers, including the Henkel acquisitions. Since January 2011, the firm has completed the acquisitions of 14 corporate brands in five separate transactions.

EES Cosmetic Solutions Links With Multiceras
Multiceras has signed a representation and distribution contract with EES Cosmetic Solutions, Forked River, NJ, to sell its products in the personal care and pharmaceutical industries in the East Coast region.

Multiceras said is proud to be working with EES, which is also a family owned business, and also with Ed Schack, who has enjoyed extensive experience selling waxes in these industries.

The Multiceras Innovation and Technology Team will periodically visit customers with EES and will be ready to consult with any customer in the area.

“We will be constantly working on the development of new products and applications, which EES will be bringing to the market” stated Noe Marmolejo, president of Multiceras.

Both companies are equally aligned in providing their customers with innovative media strategies, clear vision, and a high level of competence, they said.

Zemea Propanediol Is Certified By Natrue
DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products Company’s Zemea propanediol has been independently reviewed by Quality Assurance International (QAI) and certified as 100% derived natural ingredient by Natrue.

Prestige Beauty Sales Surge in China
•Total prestige beauty sales in China increased 21% last year, according to a new study by The NPD Group. The skin care and makeup categories each showed healthy growth of 23% and 17%, respectively.

In prestige skin care, all the segments (face essence, face moisturizer, face basic care, eye, sun treatment, body, and all other: hair, lip, nail, etc.) had steady growth, with face essence (+5%) and moisturizer (+21%) taking the lead by capturing nearly half of skin care sales.

By attribute, anti-aging continued to play as the driving engine by taking half of the skin care category sales and posting a robust growth of nearly 27% in 2011, compared to 2010. Hydrating (+19%) and whitening (+15%) skin care also played a big role in category growth, according to NPD.

In prestige makeup, the face segment captured 59% of the category’s dollar share and increased 18% in dollar sales from 2010. Products that make the face look lighter and smoother like foundation and makeup base continued to play a key role in China. Foundation and makeup base led the face category, up 24% and 30%, respectively.

In addition to face products, lip helped drive the growth in makeup, up 26.5% in 2011. Specifically, lipstick sales grew 31% and lipgloss posted a 22% increase.

On the other hand, sales of eye products were soft (+6%) due to mascara’s sharp decline of 3% in dollars and the slower paced sales of eyeshadow and eyeliner, according to NPD.

Sun Care Expert Chris Vaughn Dies
• Sun care industry expert Chris Vaughn passed away last month. Vaughn founded SPF Consulting, a contract manufacturing firm based in Pompano Beach, FL. In addition, he was an integral part of the development of the Florida Chapter of the SCC. Vaughn had been an SCC member since 1975 and was the Florida Chapter Chair in 1990 and again in 1999.

He will be remembered for his huge contribution to the sunscreen industry, all his tireless efforts and contributions to the FLSCC sunscreen symposiums past and for his very colorful personality.
