• Anti-aging skin care is one the cosmetic industries hottest categories, and the keynote speaker at Happi Anti-Aging Conference & Exhibition, Dr. Nicholas V. Perricone, MD, clearly has his fingers on the pulse of the space. Dr. Perricone’s presentation—“Nutrigenomics and Cell Signaling: The Future of New Product Development”—will kick off the conference, which will be held on Sept. 18-19 at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, NJ.

L’Oréal, AKK Promote Sustainable Trade Of Shea Kernels
• L’Oréal and AAK have signed an agreement to develop the trade of shea kernels to improve the volumes and the quality of the raw material and to secure improved living conditions for women in Burkina Faso, West Africa.

The agreement is linked to an initiative that AAK announced earlier this year, which will triple the company’s activities to include more than 30,000 women in Burkina Faso. L’Oréal will now actively support AAK’s program and will be the receiver of the shea emanating from the project until at least 2014.

“We are very pleased to have L’Oréal as a close partner in this initiative,” said Arne Frank, CEO and president for AAK. “Through our close relations with customers such as L’Oréal and with the local communities where we operate, we are committed to integrating sustainability in all our activities, with a balanced and holistic approach.”

L’Oréal’s interest in shea refers to the company’s Solidarity Sourcing program, which promotes social inclusion in countries where the Group operates. The program reaches out to fair-trade producers, companies working for the inclusion of disabled people, companies promoting social integration, very small, small and mid-sized businesses and minority-owned companies (depending on local law).

The cooperation with AAK will further strengthen L’Oréal’s work by improving the living conditions for the women groups collecting shea kernels in West Africa.

Robertet’s ‘Seed to Scent’ Celebrates Milestone
• Robertet’s latest “Seed to Scent” luncheon at the New York Botanical Garden—“Rolls Royce & The Bespoke Rose—honored how both the luxury car maker and the fragrance house transform and integrate natural materials in their respective design.

Plus, the event also celebrated a company milestone: 160 years of cultivating and processing scented roses.

The two companies undertook a “Seed to Scent” journey that led to the creation of a limited-edition scent collection, numbered 1 through 160. Each of the numbered scents is wrapped in a customized Rolls Royce upholstery leather wrap that represents each year of Robertet’s work with scented roses.


SACI Golf Outing Is Set for Sept. 10
• The Sales Association of the Chemical Industry (SACI) Golf Outing is slated for Monday, Sept. 10 at Knob Hill Golf Course in Manalapan, NJ. Reservations for the outing are due Sept. 1. The price is $165 per golfer and includes golf, cart, and dinner. Prizes will be presented at the end of the round.

11th New Jersey Symposium on Biomaterials Science
• The Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick, NJ will play host to the 11th New Jersey Symposium on Biomaterials Science, Oct. 9-11.

Joachim Kohn, Ph.D., Rutgers University, will deliver the opening day keynote address, “Perspectives on Bioactivity.”

Sessions will include: Controlling Cell Behavior through Bioactive Materials; Chemical Approaches for Creating Bioactive Materials; Approaches to Regeneration of Musculoskeletal Tissues; Data-driven Presentations on Bioactivity; Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine; Immunogenicity of Decellularized Materials; Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine; Imaging and Characterization of Cells on Bioactive Scaffolds; and Translational Research in Regenerative Medicine.

In addition to posters and exhibits, a panel discussion entitled “The Crooked, Rocky Path: How a Discovery Progresses from the Lab to the Clinic,” will be moderated by Peter J. Butch, III, Partner, Fox Rothschild LLP.

Also planned is a special workshop on non-invasive technologies presented by the Center for Dermal Research (CDR). Babar K. Walgreens To Acquire USA Drug Pharmacy Chain in Mid-South
• Walgreen Co. is purchasing a regional drugstore chain in the mid-South region of the US from Stephen L. LaFrance Holdings, Inc. and members of the LaFrance family. The transaction includes 144 stores currently operated under the USA Drug, Super D Drug, May’s Drug, Med-X and Drug Warehouse stores located in Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

The acquisition also includes corporate offices, a distribution center located in Pine Bluff, AR, and a wholesale and private brand business, for a total of approximately $438 million subject to adjustment in certain circumstances. The chain recorded sales of $825 million in 2011.

“This acquisition expands our business in an important region of the country,” said Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson. “It will provide significant new pharmacy business for us in this region while also enabling us to bring the Walgreens experience to many additional smaller communities where USA Drug has developed strong operational expertise.”

The transaction is subject to satisfaction of regulatory requirements and other closing conditions, and is expected to close around Sept. 1, 2012.

“What is now USA Drug began from a single store I opened in Pine Bluff, IA, in 1968 and has grown to more than 140 stores in seven states,” said Stephen L. LaFrance, chairman and owner of Stephen L. LaFrance Holdings, Inc. “We chose to sell our business to Walgreens not only because it is the premier drugstore company in our industry, but also because Walgreens will continue to provide our customers with the service and products they have come to expect.

The acquired drugstores will continue in the near term to operate under their current brand names after the transaction closes, and decisions will be made over time regarding the best, most effective way to harmonize Walgreens and the acquired brands.


Ulta Beauty Opens PA Distribution Center
• Ulta Beauty has opened its new 373,000 square foot distribution center in Chambersburg, PA; it is the company’s third distribution center in the US.

The retailer says this new spot is a key component of its 1,000 unit store growth strategy.

“Our new Northeast distribution center is an important part of Ulta Beauty’s growth strategy and will support new store growth and online expansion,” said Chuck Rubin, president and CEO.

“With thousands of products being shipped on a daily basis both to our stores and directly to our e-commerce customers, we expect the facility to be busy and efficient. As an added benefit, we also welcome the opportunity to contribute to the economic growth of the local community in Chambersburg.”
