As a free safety who hasn't had a hair cut in more than a decade, you can bet that Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu deals with plenty of troublesome split ends. All that changed, however, when the perennial Pro Bowler got his first haircut in 11 years to bring awareness to Veterans of Foreign Wars programs and services that work to alleviate veterans’ struggles as part of The “VFW Mane Event” at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
The VFW Mane Event raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Veteran programs, according to organizers. Polamalu has been the spokesperson for Head & Shoulders for five years. Prior to the cut, Troy’s hair was prepped with Head & Shoulders For Men to ensure his iconic strands were “Troy Tested and Approved” and ready for the cut. Veterans then cut a lock of his hair, which the VFW plans to auction at a later date to benefit the organization.
Polamolu and his wife, Theodora, have supported Veterans Affairs for years, according to Trib Live. The couple founded the Harry Panos Fund for Veterans to support charities that focus on the military. It's named for Theodora's grandfather, a World War II veteran.
"Unfortunately, we live in a society now that is all about, 'What have you done for me lately?' " Polamalu told Trib Live. "Once a veteran is done with his service, we just kind of forget about him. I don't think anybody could argue against the fact that they've done more for this country than any other person."
