The Independent Cosmetics Manufacturers and Distributors (ICMAD) is bringing new talent into the beauty packaging design industry with its 2014-15 Young Designers Competition for participating colleges. Created to foster creativity and encourage innovation, the competition requires students to create a unique primary and secondary packaging design for a specific type of cosmetic container.
Three winners, to be announced by January 2015, will attend an exclusive awards dinner hosted by ICMAD in Newport Beach, California, and will receive tours and meetings with executives from top cosmetic companies as well as a cash award. The first place winner will receive a $5,000 contract assignment to design a new line of bottles by the beauty packaging company, East Hill Industries, Inc. This year’s contest requires students to design a 6 oz. clear squeeze bottle label and outer packaging for a personal care product, such as shampoo, lotion, hair gel, bath products, etc.
Founded in 1998, the Young Designers Competition is now one of the beauty industry’s most prestigious design awards. The competition highlights the importance of package design, a specialized and highly in-demand design form that combines esthetic beauty with functionality. This year’s participating colleges are the American Academy of Art, Colorado Mesa University, Colorado Mountain College, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) Los Angeles, FIDM San Francisco, Harrington College of Design (Chicago), Penn College of Arts & Design, Miami School of Art & Design, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Louisiana State University, Creighton University, Texas Women’s University, Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Canada), and Chapman University.
