For the past 15 years EPA's label for safer chemical products has been known as the Design for the Environment, or the “DfE,” label. The updated version is the new Safer Choice Label. More than 2,000 products currently qualify to carry this stamp.
According to Gina McCarthy, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “The name says it all: Safer Choice products are safer for you, your kids, your pets and the environment. Our scientists employ a stringent set of human health and environmental safety standards when reviewing products for the Safer Choice program, so a product with the label is backed by EPA science. Consumers know it’s a credible stamp they can trust.Safer Choice products are a winning idea for the companies that make them, too. Major producers and retailers like Clorox, Walmart, Jelmar/CLR, Earth Friendly Products, Bissel, Wegmans, and hundreds of others have agreed to start putting Safer Choice products on the shelves this year.”
This spring and summer, products will start to carry the Safer Choice label with many more to be added over the coming months and years.
“We are working closely with many partners, including retailers, non-governmental organizations and the EPA to identify ways that manufacturers and marketers can meet demands for ‘greener’ products,” said Chris Cathcart, president and CEO of the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA), a group impacted by this new labeling system. “Our members’ products are formulated and evaluated for safety and effectiveness before entering the marketplace.”
