Earlier this week, a bill designed to help accelerate the development of vaccines and treatments for the Zika virus was referred to the House Committee. The “Adding Zika Virus to the FDA Priority Review Voucher Program Act”—which was introduced in February by Sens. Johnny Isakson (D-GA), Al Franken (D-MN), Sherrod Brown, D (OH), and Bill Nelson, (D-FL)—passed the Senate on March 17.
The legislation, according to its sponsors, would add Zika virus to the FDA’s Priority Review Voucher Program, which encourages the development of treatments for neglected tropical diseases.
“The Zika virus poses a serious national public health threat, and Georgia, along with other Southeastern states, is in the firing line for potential outbreaks,” said Sen.Isakson. “With its rapid rise of outbreaks in the United States now nearing 200 cases, we need to take action. I encourage the House to act swiftly and pass this bill to help encourage the development of vaccines and treatments for the Zika virus.”
