Mother Dirt, the company that touts probiotic skin care products, has rolled out a series of updates to its biome-friendly shampoo. Mother Dirt Shampoo, which has been preservative-free since its inception, now has an extended expiration date of six months, which the company says is a 3X improvement over the previous iteration.
The extension in shelf life also enabled a transition to new packaging for the shampoo, moving away from an airless packaging system to a squeezable bottle that uses 49% less plastic.
That step is part of the brand's continued effort to conserve energy and reduce the footprint of users' personal care routines. The shampoo is a color-safe formula formulated with only six plant-based ingredients that enables users to extend the time between shampoos, according to the compay, which is based in Cambridge, MA.
"Beyond any singular update, we're most excited to be pioneering a new way to develop products with the skin's microbiome at the forefront," said Jasmina Aganovic, president of Mother Dirt. "Our patent-pending development process ensures that each ingredient and formula are tested against the most sensitive beneficial members of this microbial ecosystem, something no one else in the industry is currently doing."
The nature of preservative-free formulation requires all Mother Dirt products to come with an expiration date that ensures stability and freshness. These expiration periods span months, not years, an important distinction relative to an entire industry that formulates with preservatives that are inherently anti-microbial in purpose and activity. All Biome-Friendly products come with a unique label that verifies it has been tested and shares important information about the expiration date, including the lot number for the product, said the firm.
