Shiseido Americas Corporation is offering customized foundation through what it is calling a "game-changing beauty app" that is exclusively available for iPhone. The venture capitalizes on Shiseido's acquisition of MATCHCo. The combination of this new, game-changing digital platform with Shiseido's complexion-expert brand, bareMinerals, marks a revolution in the beauty category, according to the company.
Through the MATCHCo technology, users can precisely tailor their makeup and have it custom-blended and delivered to her doorstep. The first product under this partnership umbrella is the bareMineralsMADE-2-FIT App.
"Since its founding in 1976, bareMinerals has always put customization for its consumers first, investigating and advocating for new technologies to serve them," said Jill Scalamandre, president of the Global Shiseido Make-up Center of Excellence. "Known for creating innovative formulas with pure, nourishing ingredients, the company has been connecting with its customers in meaningful, forward-thinking ways for over 40 years. For that reason, bareMinerals is an ideal partner for MATCHCo: Together, they're looking to fundamentally change the way consumers shop and experience cosmetics."
MATCHCo was founded in 2013 by Andy Howell and Dave Gross, two veterans of marketing, consumer behavior and customization technology design who are based in Santa Monica and Palo Alto, California. The company was sold to Shiseido Americas in January 2017.
"We're excited to leverage our startup's unique platform technology and digital-insight tools across Shiseido's portfolio," said Howell. "It not only lets us capture a major consumer trend – cosmetics customization – but also offers huge potential for opening up 'A.I. for beauty'."
