Legislators in Hawaii have passed Senate Bill 2571, which would prohibit the sale and distribution of OTC sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, two ingredients that many advocates contend are damaging coral reefs and ocean life.
As of this news post, Hawaii Gov. David Ige had not signed the llaw, which would will make the state the first in the US to have such legislation on the books.
The new law would take effect on Jan. 1, 2021.
Sunscreen manufacturers, including Coppertone owner Bayer, said the the new law goes too far, while the Hawaii Medical Association asked for further study, noting the importance of sunscreen in skin cancer prevention.
But there are sunscreen companies that are applauding the legislation, including members of the Safe Sunscreen Council. Members of this coalition include Badger, Babo Botanicals, Suntegrity and Raw Elements. (To learn more about Raw Elements, see this recent feature from Happi.)
A report in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser said the bill passed with just four of 76 legislators voting it down.
