Philip Pelusi, Hair care expert for Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi, P2 by Philip Pelusi & Performance X208.14.17
This summer’s hair trends are easy to create and have a casual and effortless look. But our attitude about the sun, more specifically the ultra violet rays from the sun, should be nothing like laidback. UV Rays have damaging effects on the scalp and hair. But this doesn’t have to involve that much work on the client’s part; but instead with the right assortment of products, hairstyling and hair protection can go hand in hand.
Summer Sombre
One of the hot hair color trends for this summer is Sombre. And as the name depicts, this is a softer more-subtle version of the very popular Ombre color trend from seasons back. There is not a dramatic contrast from a darker root area to very light ends. Instead, Sombre highlights start about 2 – 3” away from the scalp, and although the root area is darker than the highlights, the variation is not that vast.
This is a great look for hues ranging from dark blondes to dark brunettes. To achieve the look, make sure the ends are brighter and lighter than the roots but not a stark difference. This look is also best reserved for long length heads of hair. Longer lengths allow for a more gradual transition of color from dark to light. And for an even more effortless cool vibe, clients should embrace their natural texture or create disheveled waves to really showcase this summer sun-kissed look.
Although the Sombre trend is casual, we want to take the hair and scalp’s protection from the sun very seriously. Ultra Violet Rays cause the same trauma to the scalp as they do to the face and body. Ultra Violet Rays break down the collagen and elastin in the scalp making it weaker but most importantly leaving the scalp in serious jeopardy for possible melanoma. Also, the hair can get a “sunburn” just like the skin and scalp and in our experience this is something we have found most clients and stylists are not aware of. Those same UV rays that break down the collagen and elastin in the skin also break down the lipids, protein and strength of the hair, resulting in dry, dull, damaged and color faded hair.
First, UV rays attack the cuticle of the hair as it is the most exterior layer of the hair fiber. The cuticle layers of the hair act as tiny shields locked together by lipids which also help the cuticle to adhere to the cortex of the hair. The cuticle’s role is critical in that its job is to protect the protein, moisture and color molecules that lie below in the cortex. Also, when the cuticle is healthy, it lies flat against the cortex like shingles on a roof, smooth and silky, reflecting light and allowing the beautiful color to shine thru from beneath. But when the cuticle is abraded and broken it looks more like a pothole-filled road with bumps and dips. The sun-damaged cuticle is therefore no longer a smooth surface from which light can reflect resulting in hair fabric that has no shine and luster.
To ward off these harmful effects and simultaneously style your Sombre’ look, we recommend using a hair groom with natural, plant derived UV Filters. Sun protection was one of the motivating factors in my creating our P2 by Philip Pelusi Potion. And it’s perfect for this season’s Sombre’ look both from a styling and sun protection perspective. First, P2 Potion is a completely weightless hair groom that allows your natural texture to shine through. It should be applied to clean, conditioned, damp hair and combed through with a wide tooth comb. This will help more evenly distribute the product for easier styling, reduced frizz and better overall sun protection. P2 Potion’s Guar and USDA Certified Organic Baobab Seed Oil, helps create lustrous slip helping to detangle the hair but more importantly helps reduce frizz but with zero weight. Hair looks full of volume, light and airy. Be sure when applying P2 Potion to lightly massage onto the scalp as well.
Next, using opening fingers, tousle the hair at the root area. This can work best with the head tipped upside down. Slide the fingers in like a comb, and gently shake the root area back and forth a few times. This action wakes up the natural texture after being combed smooth with product. To style, simply attach a cone-diffuser to your hairdryer and lift and support the waves while drying. This takes the weight off the length of the hair allowing the waves to dry in a fuller formation.
And although this makes the texture perfect to show off the Sombre color trend, its’ P2 Potion’s sun protection that we are most proud of. Eight plant derived UV protectants help protect the scalp and hair’s color and strength including our proprietary Philip Pelusi Matrix Blend comprised of Matricaria, Sage, Horseradish, Asafetida, Blackberry and Grape Seed. Fennel and Chlorophyllin/Copper Complex help filter UV Rays helping to lessen their damaging impact to the hair and scalp. Because Chlorophyll is the pigment that gives plants and algae their green color and traps light needed for photosynthesis in plants, it makes an excellent light absorber. As an ultraviolet light filter it helps protect hair from the harmful rays of the sun that can degrade hair fabric causing loss of tensile strength and color.
P2 Potion was designed to be so light that it can be applied repeatedly while at the beach or poolside for on-going summer sun protection. This amazing styling properties also help hair looked groomed while outdoors in the summer wind or salt air.
And lastly, my passion for sun protection for the hair and the client’s hair color investment, lead me to create a color locking product, Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Color Lock, that is mixed into the actual color formula. There also is an at-home size color fadage prevention product. There are many new innovations in sun protection within this product of which the ingredients are deposited into the cortex of the hair along with the color molecules. Sunflower Seed Extract proved to have a 38% improved color-loss protection against shampooing and was 3 times more efficient against UV radiation resulting in protecting color and strength.
An optimized coconut derived protein micro-emulsion penetrates deeply into hair, forming a protective shield sealing in hair color and protecting hair’s strength against UVB, the primary cause of physical cystine damage, and Tryptophan (key amino acid protein) protection damage to Cystine and Tryptophan. A Patented Board Spectrum UVA/UVB Absorber Micro-emulsion proved to provide long lasting substantive cystine bond protection, 58% - 320% more effective than competition. This helps retard the key amino acid Tryptophan from decomposing when exposed to UV radiation resulting in color loss and damage.
Here Comes the Hun
The Hun hairstyle trend is one of the most popular for Summer 2017. This half up, half down bun (ala The Hun) hairstyle is perfect for a bad hair day, an at the beach look or just a simple summer style. There are several key trend points to note to achieve this look. First, the bun’s position on the head. Most of the hair is left down for this look. But the hair on top of the head is pulled back and away from the face. The hair can be pulled up and back from both temple areas, or the entire front hairline around the face can be pulled back or as a last option, the hair can be pulled back but leaving the front hairline out. This last option is a perfect solution for those with shorter fringe areas. The bun itself should be top-knotted either on top of the head or back on the crown.
Texture is also key to this look. The quality of the hair should be top-notch but the texture wavy and disheveled as if it happened effortlessly. Also, we want to get some sun protection in the mix here as well. Sun exposed hair needs hydration and protection. That’s the thought process behind our Tela Beauty Organics by Philip Pelusi Guardian Angel Solar Hair Serum.
Sunflower Seed Extract and Chlorophyllin filter UVA/UVB from sunlight to help provide maximum protection of hair fiber from hair color fadage and tensile strength degradation while unique ultra-lux hydrating oils help replenish lost moisture due to sun exposure, heat styling and hair coloring. USDA Certified Organic Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil helps strengthen and moisturize hair, helping create smoothness and shine. This cold-pressed oil native to tropical South America is high in protein and rich in fatty acids Omega 3, 6 and 9 as well as rich in hair protective antioxidants Vitamins A and E to help protect from environmental pollutants.
Cold-pressed, USDA Certified Organic Quinoa Seed Oil penetrates cuticle and cortex to smooth, strengthen and enhance hair. Organic Quinoa protein is considered a complete protein meaning it contains all 8 essential amino acids as well as Vitamin E; helping to create brilliant shine, moisturized and stronger hair, reduced frizz and heat protection. Also, USDA Certified Organic Jamaican Black Castor Oil, rich with Vitamin E and Omega 9 Fatty Acids, adds incredible shine, moisture as well as anti-frizz action.
So, to coax texture into beach waves, we recommend our Tela Beauty Organics Beach Hair. This dry-hair styling groom has a smooth yet gritty texture simultaneously hydrating while creating that just-from-the beach look but with zero damage. Its USDA Certified Organic Sugar Cane Granules are massaged into the hair and scalp helping hair strands lift-up and away from each other creating that sultry summer texture. Scrunch through, then form your hun. Add a bit more to finesse the finished look. Creamy USDA Certified Organic Shea Butter and Beeswax help hydrate summer sun exposed hair adding lustrous shine but without weighing hair down.
