Suncare sales are surging. In 2005, dollar sales for sun tan products increased more than $1.1 billion, according to Euromonitor International, Chicago, IL. Protection products reached over $820 million, self tanners brought in almost $313 million, with after sun products making up the difference with sales of $22.5 million.

The jump in sales can be attributed to several factors such as better educated consumers, better and more varied products and ease-of-use. Industry experts speaking to happi agreed that sun care users are looking for products that offer convenience, fast and easy application and high SPFs.

But Rich Miller, vice president, Teeka Tan, Inc., Boca Raton, FL, insists consumers more than ever are aware of the dangers of UV exposure.

“You see more people wearing screens and blocks than in the past,” he commented. “The numbers can be misleading from year to year depending on weather patterns, particularly around big holiday weekends. However, the one area I think the entire industry needs to focus on is educating younger people, who have a certain air of invincibility about them. They should learn to protect themselves a bit more from the sun so later on in life they won’t be forced to enjoy a beautiful sunny day from indoors.”

Education is important, but so are esthetics. While Stephanie Mellenberndt, marketing director, Hawaiian Tropic, concurs that education is the best sun block, she adds, “The newer more interesting trend is the drive for the esthetic properties of the formulas. [Consumers] are looking for lightweight, non-greasy applications.”

Consumers are also focused on gentle formulations, according to Casi Hudson, director of marketing, Nature’s Gate, Chatsworth, CA.

“Knowing that you are protecting your skin and using a gentle, safe product is especially important for an educated consumer. Being able to provide each of these key benefits in a product that is also beautifully packaged and luxuriously formulated is precisely what the current market place is demanding.”

And that’s what happi has seen most this season, the combination of effective products that smell good, feel good and come in packages that are attractive and easy to use. As with many personal care products, the spa experience is slowly creeping into sun care formulations and marketing campaigns.

So Hot It Glows

Without a doubt, the biggest sun care buzz this year has been around the numerous “glow” products on the market. These products promise more than just the self-tanner, which some consumers still hesitate to use on their faces.

“The Glow concept is so successful for two reasons,” Ms. Mellenberndt of Hawaiian Tropic explains. “First, it simplifies the consumer’s life by accomplishing two things in one, daily moisturizing and sunless tanning. Secondly, because it takes the fear out of sunless tanning. There is no need to be careful, you just moisturize and get great results.”

One application of Island Glow from Hawaiian Tropic moisturizes skin for more than 12 hours with a soothing green tea scent. Formulated with erythrulose and a small amount of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) for controllable color, it is non-streaking, non-comedogenic and available in light and medium skin tones.

Nature’s Gate sunblock uses a Giggleberry scent to appeal to kids.
Banana Boat’s EveryDay Glow Daily Moisturizer is said to enhance the appearance of natural skin in fair and medium tones. The lightweight moisturizer uses shea butter, aloe vera, vitamins A, C and E and has a clean fresh scent. The formula is oil free and contains DHA and erythrulose for a subtle, yet noticeable, tan that last for days. It’s available in 7.5oz. for $5.79.

L’Oréal Paris introduced Sublime Glow Daily Moisturizer and Natural Skin Tone Enhancer. According to the company, natural skin tone enhancers and light-capturing micro-pearls work with an individual’s unique body chemistry to give a hint of summer color. Natural ingredients such as mango butter, vitamin E and sweet almond oil moisturize and condition for beautiful skin. The formula is designed for fair and medium skin tones. Suggested retail price is $9.99.

Nature’s Gate Organics Advanced Sun Collection has added Happy Glow Lucky, a natural bronzer that moisturizes with certified organic botanicals and provides sun-kissed color compliments of natural mica infusions.

Gradual Tan Faces is the newest addition to Coppertone’s line of sunless tanning products. Gradual Tan Faces builds a natural looking color that users can control day by day. It’s been specially developed for use on delicate facial skin, won’t clog pores and contains vitamin E and pro-vitamin B5 to moisturize. A 2.5oz. tube retails for $6.99 and the 9oz. bottle for the body retails for $8.99.

Made in the Shade

Self-tanning products have come a long way since the uneven coverage, orange coloring and embarrassing streaks of earlier formulations. Euromonitor indicates that self-tanner sales in 2005 reached almost $313 million, with sales forecasted to hit well over $340 million in 2006, proving that consumers are starting to trust self-tanners to give them a natural look. And marketers are responding by putting more and more at-home tanning systems on the shelves, featuring added benefits and spa-like experiences.

L’Oréal Paris Dermo-Expertise introduced two new products to enhance the self-tanning experience—Sublime Bronze Sunless Scrub (SRP $8.99) for prepping and Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Towelettes for the Face (SRP $9.99) for gentle, convenient facial tanning. Sublime Bronze Sunless Scrub is a body exfoliant applied in the bath or shower. It uses microbeads in a patented beta hydroxy complex to gently smooth away rough, dead skin cells to ensure a natural-looking tan. The Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Towelettes for the Face are pre-moistened and contain DHA, an active self-tanning ingredient, for sensitive facial skin and to provide natural looking color. Its non-comedogenic, quick-drying formula has a fresh fragrance, and includes vitamin E and gentle AHA derivatives to smooth and hydrate parched skin.

Neutrogena Moisture Rich Sunless Tanning SPF 20 offers sunless tanning with a high SPF moisturizer. It delivers a healthy looking tan while leaving skin silky, soft and smooth. It uses patented Helioplex technology for UVA SPF 20 protection and is available in medium and deep colors. The 4oz. package retails for $9.49.

For a sun-kissed glow without sun damage, Exuviance Skin Healthy Sunless Tanning mousse is a quick-drying, color-, fragrance-, oil- and alcohol-free mousse that produces a natural-looking, even tan on the face and body within a few hours. It’s formulated with gluconolactone, an antioxidant polyhydroxy acid that moisturizes and provides light exfoliation for smooth skin and even coverage .

BullFrog’s Mosquito Coast battles bugs and the sun’s rays.
Upper Tanagement from Nature’s Gate is a streak-free self-tanner that provides lasting color without exerting much effort. It’s formulated with certified organic botanicals to provide extra moisture.

Banana Boat’s Summer Color Sunless Airbrush Self-Tanner with Bronzer has time-release color technology dual tanning agents for a tan that lasts up to seven days. The quick-drying, rub-free formula can be sprayed at any angle to provide streak-free color. Suggested retail price for 5oz. is $9.99.

Estée Lauder’s Go Tan Air-Brush Self-Tan spray uses professional air brush technology and a light, oil-free, quick-drying formula that protects skin against free radical damage with vitamin E. Caffeine and sucrose act as anti-irritants. The aerosol retails for $28.50.

Sun Laboratories, Chatsworth, CA, lets users sleep in with Tan Overnight, which claims to give a medium tan that lasts for seven days. It retails for $14.50 for 2.7oz. Sun Lab’s Strictly Faces facial self-tanning lotion comes in medium or very dark and contains SPF 15 for protection and natural fruit acids to combat the sun’s aging effects.

The Warmth of the Sun

Sun care product sales brought in over a billion dollars in 2005, with sun protection accounting for the lion’s share—more than $820 million. According to Euromonitor International, mass sales reached $786.7 million, while prestige sun protection products brought in just over $34 million. Tony Guiliano, president of consumer brands for Del-Ray Dermatologicals, Johnson City, TN, explained, “Consumers are more concerned with exposure to UV light and sun protection, just witness the significant growth in the sun protection segment of the sun care category, which now exceeds the sun tanning products segment. Consumers are becoming savvier about sun protection. They know it’s not just about protection from burning, but about blocking UVA rays—those responsible for aging, wrinkling and skin cancer.”

Casi Hudson agreed. “Consumers are absolutely becoming more concerned—and more informed—about the damaging effects of UV exposure. While it’s best to avoid UV rays, we all know that is next to impossible. This is precisely why a quality sunscreen is critical. Arming oneself with an appropriate level of SPF and formulations created with ingredients that are safe, gentle and effective is the best way to protect skin from potential damage.”

Added Mr. Miller, “The market seems to be trending toward higher SPF protection products. In addition, our research indicates that sun care consumers look for non-greasy, fast absorbing products that have a pleasant fragrance and won’t irritate their skin.”

According to Information Resources, Inc. (IRI), Chicago, IL, the top sellers of sun care lotions in 2005 were Banana Boat, Coppertone, private label, Hawaiian Tropic and Neutrogena. The major brands all have launches in 2006 with intent to remain favorites with consumers.

Banana Boat has new additions to its UltraMist Continuous Spray line, with Sport SPF 30 Continuous Clear Spray, Ultra Sunblock SPF 30 Continuous Clear Spray and UltraMist Kids SPF 50 Continuous Lotion Spray with a fruity fragrance. The 6oz. sprays are waterproof, hypoallergenic, quick drying, non- greasy and oil-free. They offer broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and retail for $9.99.

In 2006, new Coppertone Kids Continuous Spray Sunscreen (SPF 50) and Continuous Spray Dry Oil Sunscreen (SPF 10) will join the sunscreen line. Coppertone will also add SPF 15 formulations of Sport Continuous Spray Sunscreen and Continuous Spray Sunscreen. Six ounces costs $9.99.

Banana Boat has a lot to offer kids and babies.
According to Coppertone, the convenience of Continuous Spray products is appealing to everyone from adults to children because the product sprays at any angle—even when the bottle is upside down—and is ideal for applying to hard to reach places. Additionally, SPF 50 versions of Coppertone Sunscreen Lotion, Sport Lotion, Waterbabies Lotion, Waterbabies Lotion Spray and Kids Lotion are currently available.

Hawaiian Tropic’s Sun-Sure patent pending formulation technology offers higher SPFs with less chemical sunscreens, longer -lasting protection and is photostable, which means that it’s sun tested to help ensure the broad spectrum protection is maintained in the sun. According to Hawaiian Tropic, less degradation reduces free radical activity.

The latest in the Hawaiian Tropic Ozone Sport line and featuring SunSure technology is Ozone Sport Sunblock lip balm with SPF 45. Recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, it helps reduce chances of blistering and sunburn, as well as being waterproof. Ozone Sport Lotion SPF 30+ is non-migrating, sweat-proof, and waterproof and comes in a 6oz. “No Slip Grip” bottle. It contains Parsol 1789 for broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and has a neutral scent.

New from Neutrogena is the Fresh Cooling Body Mist Sunblock in SPF 30 and 45 which utilizes Helioplex, (containing avobenzone), a UVA/UVB protection technology that, according to the company, provides one of the most advanced UVA protections available in the U.S. Developed with a one-touch, continuous-spray mist delivery system, Fresh Cooling Body Mist Sunblock instantly refreshes and cools your skin, even in hot and humid weather. It has a lightweight, non-sticky formula that sprays on at any angle to protect even hard-to-reach places. It’s waterproof, sweat-proof and resists rub-off, so it won’t clog pores or sting eyes. The 5 fl.oz. spray costs $9.49.

Hawaiian Tropic’s Island Glow is the latest in tanning facial moisturizers.
The 3oz. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 55 feels powder soft, uses Helioplex sun protection and retails for $9.49. Neutrogena Age Shield Sunblock SPF 30 and 45 is a blend of elegant skin care aesthetics and Helioplex technology. The oil-free formula is non-greasy and absorbs quickly into skin, while conditioning ingredients help to hydrate and replenish. It’s fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, waterproof and sweat-proof. According to Neutrogena, Age Shield protects against the signs of premature aging caused by cellular and capillary damage, collagen breakdown and inflammation. Four ounces retails for $9.49.

Also concerned with the sun’s aging rays is Nature’s Gate Save Face & Body sunblock lotion SPF 15, which is part of the newly repackaged Nature’s Gate sun care line. According to the company, the product not only helps prevent sunburn, but also fends off the wrinkles, brown spots and sagging that can occur from sun damage. It provides broad-spectrum protection using Parsol 1789, is extra mild, fragrance free and uses certified organic lavender, chamomile and cucumber. A 4oz. bottle sells for $7.95.

Estée Lauder’s new Multi-Protection sun lotion SPF 30 for either face or body and oil-free Multi-Protection sun spray SPF 15 feature A.S.P (Anti-Spot Protection) Technology, which uses melanase to help minimize hyper-pigmentation caused by excessive sun exposure. Rosemary extract, vitamins C and E, and linoleic acid help keep skin hydrated. It retails for $22.

Exuviance by NeoStrata, Princeton, NJ, has launched Essential Multi-Protective Lip Balm SPF 15, Essential Multi-Defense Day Fluid SPF 15, and Essential Multi-Defense Day Crème SPF 15. IHealth recently changed names to Teeka Tan to better reflect their core business.
For those with sensitive skin, there’s Exuviance Fundamental Multi-Protective Day Fluid SPF 15/Sensitive Formula and Day Crème SPF 15/ Sensitive Formula. Both contain a blend of cucumber and aloe to soothe and hydrate, as well as polyhydroxy acids to help combat fine lines and wrinkles. Other sun care products include Ultra Light Daily Sunscreen SPF 29 and Skin Caring Foundation SPF 15.

Del-Ray Dermatologicals now offers Blue Lizard Australian Suncream SPF 30+ in a convenient 3oz. flip-lid tube for easy carrying in purses, glove compartments, gym-, golf- or diaper bags. The innovative Smart Bottle technology used in all Blue Lizard bottles is employed in the new tube’s lid, which changes from clear to blue in the presence of UV rays, so consumers always know when it’s necessary to apply.

According to the company, Blue Lizard’s Australian-grade protection is formulated with super-micronized zinc oxide to block 99.83% of UVA light. The line is also available in Regular, Sport and Kids formulas and retails for $8.99. According to Mr. Guiliano, Blue Lizard is always evaluating the market and looking at consumer trends.

“In addition to having a chemical-free formula targeted to kids and an all-natural segment, we have a number of delivery systems we are looking at, such as a lip balm with unique healing properties, and other consumer products that will fill need gaps,” he said.

Coppertone’s newest Continuous Spray  sun care products offer something for every consumer.
According to IRI, sunscreen/insect repellent 2-in-1 products had sales of nearly $3.2 million in 2005, down over 19% from the year before. As the panic from West Nile Virus dies down in the wake of the more sensational Avian Flu, consumers may be forgetting to protect themselves from harmful bug bites as well as the sun’s dangerous rays.

According to Holly Sisson, brand manager for BullFrog Sunblock, Chattanooga, TN, today’s adults know how important it is to apply both sun block and insect repellent to themselves and their children before heading outdoors, but unfortunately, many find the process to be a time-consuming, sticky and smelly nuisance and, therefore don’t do it.

In response, BullFrog Sunblock has developed the new Mosquito Coast SPF 30 sun block and DEET-free bug spray combo, which offers eight hour outdoor protection for casual to serious outdoor activities. The light mist spray dries quickly, has a pleasant grapefruit scent and doesn’t need to be washed off immediately after coming indoors. The product contains vitamin E and aloe to moisturize skin, is EPA field-tested and approved, waterproof and sweat-proof. The 4.7 ounce bottle retails for $8.99.

Beach Babies

Challenges abound when applying sun protection to children and babies. Kids traditionally squirm away when parents try to apply sunscreen, objecting to the smell, the sting and being held down for application.

Hawaiian Tropic’s Ms. Mellenberndt said that many of the major manufacturers recognize the need for specialized sun care for children.

The cap on Blue Lizard products changes color to warn consumers of strong rays.
“Starting good habits when they are young is most important,” she explained. “Because of that, the packaging and the formulations have to appeal to the target. They have to be colorful, fun and fruity”

Added Ms. Hudson, Nature’s Gate, “Parents are recognizing that children have special sun care needs, thus the importance of safe and effective SPF products for adults and children alike. Non-organic botanicals may contain pesticide residues, which can irritate skin. Parabens can also irritate young, delicate or sensitive skin. Thus, developing sun care products that contain certified organic botanicals and non-paraben preservative systems are critically important.”

Nature’s Gate’s Giggleberry Kid’s Block SPF 30 lotion protects even after 80 minutes in water. It’s ultra-mild for young skin and the Giggleberry fragrance makes kids want to use it. The 4oz. bottle retails for $8.95.

Hawaiian Tropic Kids Sunblock Convenience Pack SPF 60+ is a full-size 8oz. bottle with a detachable 2oz. travel size for families on the go. It provides four hours of waterproof protection, is pediatrician and dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, non-stinging and has no dyes or colors. It sports an orange-cream scent, is PABA-free and recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

New in the Baby Faces and Tender Places line is Sunblock Spray lotion SPF 50 and Sunblock Stick SPF 50. Featuring the same benefits as the Kids Sunblock, it has a baby soft fragrance and is rub-resistant.

Banana Boat’s patent-pending Baby Tear-Free Sunblock 50 SPF won’t irritate babies’ eyes, is hypoallergenic, pediatrician-tested and waterproof. Suggested retail price is $9.49. The fragrance-free Kids Tear-Free Sunblock in SPF 30 or 50 contains titanium dioxide for broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and has all the benefits of the baby sun block at the same price.

Coppertone extended its quick and convenient Continuous Spray line with Coppertone Kids Continuous Spray Sunscreen (SPF 50). The product sprays at any angle, even upside down, and the clear, no-rub formulation makes application quick and simple, even when dealing with an impatient child. Users also appreciate the exclusive Coppertone twist-and-lock cap, which prevents bothersome leaks or spills and means there is no cap to lose.

Soaking It All In

Despite all that is known about the dangers of sun worshipping, many beach-creatures still like to bronze the old fashioned way, by lying out in the sun for extended periods of time. For these consumers, Banana Boat’s Dark Tanning SPF 4 Continuous lotion spray helps prevent dryness, peeling and flaking for a naturally dark tan. Enriched with tropical oil and cocoa butter, the lightweight, sheer lotion formula is available in a banana coconut-rum fragrance at $9.99 for 6oz.

Hawaiian Tropic’s T2 Max Extreme Tanning body butter absorbs quickly to help prepare skin to tan. In addition, it helps build and extend tans while soothing and calming skin. The non-sticky formula has vitamins A, C and E, cocoa, shea and mango butters, and a coconut-nectar fragrance.

After Sundown

For those who go to the trouble of getting a tan, it makes sense to preserve it.

According to Euromonitor, last year after-sun products had sales of $22.5 million.

But after-sun products are geared for more than just extending the life of a tan; newer formulations also stress relaxation, skin care and anti-aging properties as well.

Teeka Tan After-Sun Tan Extender moisturizing lotion and  After-Sun Skin Replenisher with Carrot Oil Ultra-Moisturizing lotionhelp prevent peeling while extending a tan. The light, non-greasy formulas contain aloe, cocoa butter, collagen (which helps prevent premature aging and wrinkles), vitamins A, C and E, and other natural skin conditioners to soothe, moisturize and replenish skin. Both 8oz. pumps retail for $8.99.

Hawaiian Tropic extended its tan-extending moisturizing line with the new Lime Coolada Moisturizer with shea, cocoa and mango butters. The product contains aloe vera, vitamins and collagen to revive sun-baked, dry skin.

Will Sun Care Stay Strong?

Euromonitor International forecasts that U.S. sun care sales will reach $1.25 billion by 2010, as the Baby Boomers reach retirement age but refuse to back away from an active lifestyle.

“And not only is the sun protection segment of the sun care category growing at a significant pace, but so is overall consumption of sun care/skin care products,”  said Mr. Guiliano of Del-Ray Dermatologicals.

Mr. Miller said sun care and cosmetic formulations are converging.

“I think it is a great time to be a consumer of sun care products. New brands, new products and increased competition force everyone to bring the best of the best to marketplace,” he said. “After sun and damage repair products, along with the higher SPFs, should really shine as the Baby Boomers once again make their mark.”

Ms. Hudson identified several significant trends in the sun care category.  “First, consumers are recognizing the importance of natural and organic formulations,” she commented. “They are becoming more educated on the benefits of natural beauty and making wise, informed decisions in their skin and sun care purchases. Second, 2-in-1 products that protect against sun damage and provide anti-aging benefits are in high demand. Sun care and skin care really go hand in hand, and when you take the proper precautions against sun damage, you are also helping combat the aging process.

“The final trend that continues to be popular is the sun-alternative product,” she concluded. “Many people still avoid the sun at all costs, yet want to enjoy a toned, tanned look. The best way to achieve this look while minimizing the risks of sun damage is with a quality self-tanner or bronzer.”

Ms. Mellenberndt believes convenience matters most to sun care users. “Innovation in formula and packaging are drivers in this category,” she stated. “Convenience will more than likely continue to drive new innovation in an effort to help simplify the lives of the consumers.”
