Job Description:
The Formulation Chemist – Personal and Home Care will partner with marketing and sales to work on new product offerings, formulation development, and testing methodologies. This position will be a key contributor to the advancement of Emerald’s personal and home care product offerings.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Sales and Marketing team to problem solve and create solutions and new product offerings for a wide range of applications in the Personal Care and HI&I (Home, Industrial, and Institutional) markets for Emerald customers.
- Develop project plans prior to project initiation, provide regular updates to project requestors, and complete formal written reports which will be shared with customers and/or suppliers.
- Identify, develop (when necessary), and utilize methods to evaluate technical performance.
- Define key performance indicators for new products and identify benchmarks against which to evaluate performance.
- Use statistical tools when necessary to evaluate key product parameters.
- Support delivery of personal and home care product offerings within project timelines.
- Generate prototypes for Sales and Marketing activities.
- Understand each ingredient’s function and develop creative combinations in formulations from concept to market.
- Advise both company and customers of any potential safety or regulatory issues associated with the formulation or production of a new product offering.
- Communicate with Procurement team to stay updated on new raw materials and innovative products.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
- 7+ years of experience as an R&D formulator in the Personal Care industry
- Experience in formulating for the HI&I market is an advantage, but not a requirement
- Strong knowledge base within chemistry and principles of formulating emulsion product
- Ability to analyze data, using statistics as needed, and familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE)
- Work experience consisting of new formulation development, reverse engineering, formulation evaluation and problem-solving for the skin care, sun care, and hair care segments at a minimum
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Computer literacy: MS-Office (Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
