Job Description:
The Honest Company is expanding our Research & Development team! We’re looking for a Senior Color Chemist to support research and innovation efforts for our color cosmetic products. In this role,you’ll be expected to formulate within the strict guidelines of The Honest Company to produce colorful, innovative, and effective products in our makeup categories to ensure sustainable growth and profitability.
What you’ll do:
- Aid in batch upscale and production in both a technical and supervising role
- Benchmark competitive products and reverse-engineer based off product standards
- Respond to incoming manufacturing and customer questions by providing detailed technical research-based information and documentation
- Work directly with raw material and manufacturing suppliers to identify, assess, and createcommunication strategy around chemical sourcing and manufacturing procedures
- Research and recommend raw materials
- Maintain accurate and complete records and report findings in the form of technical documents, presentations, and standard operating procedures
- Provide technical guidance to the Product team through education and consultative assistance to professional staff
- Research new directions and ideas through examination of scientific literature and interaction with other scientist and members of the professional community
- A dynamite problem solver and project manager. You’re always thinking (at least) one step ahead.
- A strong communicator and collaborator. You work effectively with all members of the organization, from individual contributors to top execs.
- Adaptable and ambitious. You will enthusiastically take on other assignments as needed to support your team!
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or related scientific field
- 5-10 years experience in the cosmetic, skincare, personal care, and/or home cleaning industries with an emphasis in color
- Passion for and knowledge of natural and organic ingredients
- Strong development skills in ingredient functionality, material selection, and formulation
- Strong working knowledge of both lab-scale and manufacturing scale formulating and chemical engineering
- Strong knowledge of cGMP, QC, FDA, and EPA regulations as they relate to cosmetics, OTC drugs and household cleaners
- Willingness to travel up to 20% as needed
- Master’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry or related scientific field
