The retail picture in the U.S. may be cloudy, but that's not stopping a Korean skin care firm from entering the U.S. On July 21, 2009, New York City’s emporium of eclectic beauty, Takashimaya, presented the exclusive launch of the Dr. Jart+ Skin Care collection. The Korean dermatological skin care line, which will be sold at the store and on its web site (www.takashimaya-ny.com), was created by a consortium of 21 medical specialists in Asia, where the brand is already enjoying great success, particularly in Japan and Korea.

According to Sung Kyu Ock, sales manager for the Dr. Jart+ brand, the products, which launched in Asia in 2000, Korea in 2004, and are now in the US for the first time, with an official on-counter launch planned for August 2009, are known for their efficacy and sensitivity for all skin types, as well as troubled or acne-prone skin, regardless of age or gender. Kyu Ock said that the line uses low-irritative, non-colorant, and fragrance-free ingredients, minimizing the use of preservatives, alcohols, and other ingredients, which may irritate the skin. “The product line focuses on skin health, with wrinkle reduction, priming effect, and anti-irritation as the three keys to the collection,” said Kyu Ock.

A Targeted Collection

Beginning with the Dr. Jart+ BB Cream, or Premium Blemish Base, most popular in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China and Singapore, the product is not only a skin care product, designed to combat sun spots and reduce rosacea without prescription, but it is also a makeup product, designed to repair and conceal blemishes, perfect skin finish and control oil.

Ky Bae, cosmetics manager and assistant buyer at Takashimaya, in New York City.
The BB Cream line, including Premium Blemish Base, Detox Healing Blemish Base, Rejuvenating Blemish Base, Dew Drop Blemish Base, with a special water-holding system to provide moisture to the skin, control sebum, and protect and calm the skin, and Blemish Base Essence Cake, to apply with a puff following base makeup, was created to address the various needs of skin, from reducing the appearance of wrinkles and providing UV protection for mature skin, as in the Premium BB Cream, to providing coverage and blemish control, with Rejuvenating Blemish Base. Each contains SPF protection ranging from 45, in the Premium BB Cream, to SPF 35, in the Rejuvenating Blemish Base, SPF 25, in the Detox Healing Blemish Base, and SPF 23, in the Base Blemish Cake. Price points range from $62, for the Rejuvenating Blemish Base to $68, for the Healing Blemish Base.

There is also an Acne-X line, consisting of Liquid Foam, to provide moisture without drying effect, an Acne-X Clarifying Toner, Spot Out Treatment, Soothing Moisturizer, Spot Cover, Sensitive Sun Cream, Body Treatment Mask, and an environmentally-friendly pure cotton Acne-X Trouble Care Mask, to purify and calm the skin.

Dr. Jart+ Bubble Foam Pore-X.
The Cleansing collection includes All Clear Cleansing Lotion, a fragrance-free, mineral-oil free, alcohol-free botanical-based product, as well as a Magic Cleansing Oil Foam, Pore-X Bubble Foam, with a dual-bubble mechanism of large and micro bubbles to cleanse and tighten pores (($44), and an Extra Gentle Black Coal Mineral Soap, which uses natural Korean charcoal to remove dead cells.

Scrubs, Mist & Toner, Serum, Eye and Lip treatments, including Multi Action Eye Balm Dark Circle Corrector and Lip Treatment Balm, with SPF 10 and Jojoba and Olive oils, plus a Moisturizer line, which includes Whitening Water Drop, to moisten and brighten the skin, Multi Action Essence Lotion, for wrinkle improvement and film forming moisturizer, White Cure Cream, to correct pigmentation and skin damage overnight, as well as Healing Balm for extremely dry skin, completes the Moisturizer collection.

In addition, the collection includes Sun Care, Mineral in Powder Makeup, a light sebum-controlling, waterproof powder, Mineral in Pact, a talc-free, preservative-free, and oil-free coating powder to strengthen resistance against external pollutants, Mask & Pack Pore-X for sebum control and pore tightening, and Body Care.

Sung Kyu Ock. sales manager, Dr. Jart+
The Men’s collection features For Men Active Scrub Foam, to cleanse as well as tighten and firm widened pores, For Men Active Skin Essence, to brighten and clarify skin tone with a nano-emulsion delivery system, and For Men Triple Synergy BB Moisturizer, a triple function BB cream created to even skin tone naturally, provide whitening, wrinkle improvement, and UV protection in a non-sticky formula. Kyu Ock said, “It is a total care solution for men who want to cleanse and moisturize with easy to use multi-functional products.”

Kyu Ock notes that the line is currently in more than 500 stores in South Korea, has been exported to 13 different countries, and has experienced an 87% revenue increase in the past five years. He explained the thinking behind the minimalist packaging, noting that silver and black conveyed the authenticity of the brand, which is based on the credibility of the diverse medical professionals who created the line. The brand name, Dr. Jart + was formed by combining the initial “J” from Jung, one of the medical professionals who created the line, with the word “art,” to convey the artistic dimensions of skin care inherit in the collection.
