The Onion is known for lampooning the high and mighty, whether they be government leaders, actors or Corporate America, but after the online mag took a shot at Procter & Gamble with a spoof of the company's online marketing campaign, P&G hit back with a spoof of its own. As P&G noted in a press release:
The Onion had some fun with Tide this week ... Now it's our turn. Watch the cool new viral Tide Detergent video with cute, funny talking animals, an indie rock song, and an 80s-inspired rock star.
"We—and I am sure many similar brands—could relate to the article, navigating the world of social media with a brand that doesn't have an obvious fit into the landscape," said Sarah Pasquinucci, APR, Procter & Gamble External Relations NA Fabric Care. "Although we are always learning, we like to feel that we have done a pretty good job, with multiple Twitter trending topics and nearly 3 million Facebook fans.
"We knew quickly that we wanted to respond," added Pasquinucci. "We thought we would join in the fun and play the game a bit. And why not? We can laugh at ourselves."
