Road Ready

By Christine Esposito, Associate Editor | November 18, 2013

Dermalogica makes one of its most popular products available in a convenient wipe format.

The convenience of wipes can’t be denied. Consumers love the ease of use these nonwoven products offer, especially in the personal care arena.

For skin care companies, a wipe makes it easier for brand loyalists to take their favorite products on the road—and that’s just what Dermalogica has done with one of its most important SKUs.

The Carson, CA-based skin care company has made PreCleanse—one of its most popular liquid products—available in packs of biodegradable wipes.

As the first step in Dermalogica’s “double-cleanse” process, PreCleanse helps to dissolve layers of excess sebum oil, sunscreen, waterproof makeup, environmental pollutants and residual products that build-up on the skin throughout the day. It preps the skin for the second  step—a Dermalogica Cleanser, which penetrates further in the skin for professional cleansing results.

Why two steps? Dermalogica is a big proponent of proper skin cleansing. In fact, research conducted by The International Dermal Institute revealed that women typically spend approximately only three seconds when washing their faces – even at the end of the day. But with the development of long-wearing sunscreens and “24-hour” cosmetics, that means most women leave product residue on their skin, which may cause acne outbreaks, formation of milia (tiny inclusions that feel like grains of sand beneath the epidermis) and other long-term skin issues.

“We decided to take our beloved PreCleanse concept and package it for those people on-the-go and with a limited routine time,” said Claudia Aguirre, Ph.D., who is scientific communications manager for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute.

According to Dr. Aguirre, for convenience, Dermalogica used a pre-emulsified formula in travel-friendly wipes.

“This convenient wipe packs a punch with ingredients that dissolve makeup, lipstick, sunscreens and environmental pollutants, all in a gentle, biodegradable delivery system,” she said.

Ingredients include aloe, which provides refreshing and soothing properties; apple amino acids, which gently remove surface debris, including oils, without clogging follicles; and apricot kernel oil, which is rich in essential fatty acids that fortify skin without drying it out.

New PreCleanse Wipes come in a travel pouch containing 20 pre-moistened towelettes with a suggested retail price of $18. They will launch in the US in December  and will be available at Dermalogica-authorized skin centers, spas and salons.

For Aguirre, adding a wipe format makes PreCleanse road-ready.

“Now you can take the benefits of PreCleanse anywhere you want,” she concluded.
