While long on the menu at beauty spas, nail salons and aesthetics outposts, these days consumers can get waxed almost anywhere (and we’re talking real estate). Growing wax franchises like European Wax Center, LunchBox and Pretty Kitty have shifted this behind-closed-doors beauty treatment into the public eye.
And although waxing is one of the most popular methods of hair removal today, Lydia Sarfati, founder of Repechage, says not enough attention is paid to the skin during the process.
“From personal experience, I’ve had times where my waxing experiences were simply unpleasant—post wax redness, bumps, irritation and swelling, were all something I was experiencing, and I know clients are as well,” she said.
Repêchage is out to change that with its new SeaSmooth Artisan Seaweed Wax, which Sarfati formally unveiled during her company’s Annual Network Power Lunch - Champagne Brunch, held Dec. 8 at its global headquarters in Secaucus, NJ.
Repêchage’s R&D team spent three years working on the formulation, which Sarfati called the “perfect idea of what depilation is all about.”
Repêchage SeaSmooth Artisan Seaweed Wax removes hair and alleviates the side effects, according to the company. It is formulated with select seaweeds that deliver vitamins, minerals and trace elements for unparalleled smoothness, and aloe vera that helps to relieve visible irritation.
“Since this is an artisan wax, it is slowly made, and slowly poured, so it has a creamy consistency,” she said.
Sarfati pointed to the zinc oxide in the formulation, which provides natural antimicrobial action to reduce the opportunities for breakouts after a treatment.
The wax is removed with specially designed, natural and unbleached muslin strips that have a high thread count. Safarti said she tested hundreds of strips during the development process.
Sarfati put her expertise on display, waxing a model’s leg while an assistant performed a brow wax.
Following the wax, the skin is treated with Repechage’s Skin Relief Sooth gel, formulated with a combination of green rooibos and white teas, aloe leaf and cucumber extracts, hyaluronic acid and deep sea thermophilus
“Everyone is doing waxing,” Sarfati said. “What are they going to experience at your salon?” she asked the salon and aesthetic professionals at the luncheon. “Give your client an artisan experience that is different than the rest. They mind paying more for less, but they don’t mind paying more for better.”
