As seen on TV takes on a whole new meaning when Bio-Rhythmic Skin Care debuts in March on HSN. That’s because the new line is the brainchild of Dr. Paul S. Nassif, one of the most well known plastic and reconstructive surgeons in the world. But he is, perhaps, best known as a co-host, along with Dr. Terry Dubrow, on Botched!, a popular E! Network program.
Now, consumers are putting their skin care needs into the hands of this Hollywood surgeon. Through his knowledge of the skin and his hands-on experience with high profile clients, Nassif has developed a Bio-Rhythmic-based line of skin care to address the needs of the busy consumer and demands of a busy lifestyle, which can create dehydrated and “tired” skin.
“Maybe the celebrity status helps with the initial sale; I have a name that consumers can trust,” he explained. “So with that in mind, if I have a product, people will try it. But if it isn’t a quality product, people won’t make a repeat purchase.”
Nassif says he came up with the idea for Bio-Rhythmic Skin Care three years ago, when he realized even the most talented surgeon can’t help consumers reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
“As a facial surgeon, I am working on the deeper layer of the tissues; obviously there is no prevention there,” he explained. “You are fixing damage, but it doesn't help with wrinkles.”
At the same time, Nassif knows firsthand that an overscheduled schedule can wreak havoc with one’s skin.
“I came home one night after a long day; I was stressed, dehydrated and not sleeping,” he recalled.
His goal was to create a formula that would help skin repair at night, and protect and nourish it during the day.
“I figured that if I could find ingredients that help repair skin even after a lousy night’s sleep, I was accomplishing something,” he told Happi.
But Nassif didn’t try to go it alone; he started speaking with people and heard about damage caused by High Energy Visible light (wavelengths in the 380-500nm range). Consumers are flooded with blue light from their tablets to their cellphones and many other devices. About this time, Nassif learned of LipoShield, a fractionated melanin compoundsupplied by Vantage Specialty Ingredients that is said to shield skin from HEV light and prevent premature aging and hyperpigmentation.
Ultimately, Nassif enlisted an “excellent” chemist to figure out what ingredients work best with the skin’s natural biorhythm.
“There are a few surgeon brands, but they are all slapped on labels. I sat down with the chemist; we did research on biorythms,” he explained. “I gave him my vision, and the chemist did the leg work. I must have looked at 100 different products. We sat down to figure out what worked with the formulas. From the packaging to the filling, I was involved from soups to nuts.”
The result is Nassif MD Bio-Rhythmic Skincare, which is billed as the first line of skin care that addresses the dramatic and diverse bio-rhythmic changes that skin experiences within a 24-hour cycle. The three-item line includes Clock AM day serum ($95), Dawn to Dusk cleanser ($35) and Clock PM night serum ($110).
Besides LipoShield, the Clock AM formula contains Roxisomes, ergothioneine, rosemary leaf extract, vitamins C and E, hyaluronic acid and sea whip extract. Dawn to Dusk contains ivory palm seed, jojoba, pomegranate, panthenol and allantoin. Finally, Clock PM contains pomegranate safflower oil, Sederma’s Matrixyl Synthe'6, detoxophane, sea whip extract, hyaluronic acid, ergothioneine, astaxanthin and Roxisomes.
Products have been available online since mid-2015, and bloggers have raved about its aesthetics and efficacy, according to Nassif. In March, the company expects to get a boost when Nassif MD Bio-Rhythmic Skincare debuts on HSN. Now, the doctor and his team are in talks to get the line in traditional brick-and-mortar outlets and the company is working more SKUs that target specific areas such as eyes and neck, along with a firming masking and, perhaps, a sunscreen. Ambitious? Sure, but Nassif insists he’s ready to take on more, following the launch of his own line.
“It’s been interesting, I didn’t realize the work that goes into formulating,” he told Happi.com, referring to lab testing and stabilization. “I’ve learned a lot and I’ve enjoyed it, (but) I never realized it was this hard.”
Formulation work is hard enough, but finding a retail partner is usually even more daunting for a startup—but that’s not the case for this celebrity surgeon.
“Retailers aren’t that tough!” he asserted. “They love the biorhythm story and the whole repair and prevention story. So far it’s been easy.”
