Out-of-the-Box Skin Care

By Melissa Meisel, Associate Editor | December 30, 2013

A few novel ingredients just aren’t enough for these innovative launches.

Making Moves in Mass

Pro-X by Olay now offers a solution to uncover healthier, more even-toned skin at home. Its Pro-X by Olay Microdermabrasion + Advanced Cleansing System is said to offer two professional treatments in one system: microdermabrasion and daily cleansing.

A Treat for the Feet

Now Clarisonic fans can buff away dead skin from head to toe with the brand’s latest innovation, the Clarisonic Pedi ($199). According to the company, the Pedi system transforms rough, dry heels and toes into beautiful, smooth, sandal-ready feet in just minutes through a combination of a Pedi sonic device, brush head, foot smoothing and softening treatments and a foot renewing peel. The kit includes a white pedi device, pedi smoothing disc, pedi wet/dry brush head, pedi-buff sonic foot smoothing treatment, pedi-balm sonic foot softening treatment, pedi-balm sonic foot softening treatment and pedi-boost sonic foot renewing peel treatment.

Water-Fueled Foundation

Laura Geller’s Baked Elements Foundation is formulated with Italian water extracted from a 3,000-year-old thermal spring in Calabria, Italy. This revolutionary formula delivers luminous, matte, buildable coverage while essential elements from the spring water nourish and hydrate skin from the inside out. Key ingredients include hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica and jojoba oil.

Just for the Guys

Evolution Man’s latest creation is Nu Noir Face & Body Wash ($36). This time-saving wash is gentle enough for the face, yet strong enough to cleanse the body and combat skin imperfections, according to the company. A blend of over 5% AHAs and BHAs refine skin texture, while a refreshing fragrance will aide in firing up the senses. Aloe vera calms and moisturizes the skin.

Hands-On Approach

Designed for the hands—often the telltale age giveaway—Dermelect Cosmeceuticals’ Timeless Anti-Aging Daily Hand Treatment ($22) features Subtilisin, billed as innovative ingredient that is activated upon contact with water, building a barrier around the skin to lock in active ingredients like keratin peptide protein, hyaluronic acid and topical collagen. In addition to combating dryness by locking in moisture, this formulation is also said to restore youthful appearance by plumping thin skin on back of the hands with GABA and lightening spots.

According to Mintel, 42% of consumers seek products with multiple benefits.
Beauty and personal care analyst Shannon Romanowski noted, “Consumers are gravitating toward multi-functional products that allow  them to get more benefits while saving them both time and money.” Here’s a look at some new developments in the skin care segment.
