Bell Develops Exotic Fruit Scents for Personal Care
Bell Flavors & Fragrances has incorporated the stimulating scent of exotic fruits into personal care products. Prototypes of body washes and lotions have been created that feature the aromas of the acai berry, lulo, goji berry and mangosteen.
Native to South America, the acai berry is deep purple in color. The superfruit contains Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, fiber, calcium, and vitamins; and is said to have twice the level of antioxidants present in blueberries and pomegranates.
The lulo is also native to South America and debuted in the U.S. when it was served as a beverage at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The fruit has the appearance of a small orange, but when cut open has a green flesh.
The goji berry is a sweet, red fruit native to Asia that has been used as a medicinal food for thousands of years. The berry is said to strengthen the immune system, provide antioxidant and anti-aging effects, protect the liver, support eye health and improve vision, as well as build strong blood.
The mangosteen tree grows in tropical areas and has been used in folk medicine. The fruit is the size of a small apple, purple in color with a hard rind. More info: www.bellff.com or 800-323-4387.
U.S. Cosmetics Corporation Introduces Two New Products
U.S. Cosmetics Corp., Dayville, CT has launched two new products from Ichimaru Pharcos Corporation, Gifu, Japan. Biobenefity (cynara scolymus (artichoke) leaf extract), works against photo-aging of skin by inhibiting transcription of NF-Kappa B. Facial pores also become less obvious, due to reduced hyperkeratinization and lower melanin content within the pores. Improved skin elasticity is another benefit. Princess Care (geranium robertianum extract) also acts against photo-aging by inhibiting tryptase activity.
Through this inhibition, degradation of Type I thru Type IV collagen as a result of UV radiation is minimized. Princess Care also aids in the reduction of the appearance of wrinkles and helps improve skin elasticity. More info: email@example.com.
Arch Develops New Active and Natural Foaming Peptide
A new natural foaming peptide based on organic amaranth, Amaranth S. is a gluten-free grain offering a high nutritional value and a better amino acid profile than whole milk. It is intended for use in formulations marketed as natural, and is particularly suitable for conditioning and cleansing formulations, where the presence of essential amino acids in the amaranth protein provides a nourishing effect on the skin. Amaranth S is a foam-boosting agent, acting as an organically-based, secondary surfactant to be used in shampoos, gels, cleansers and liquid soaps. Amaranth S can be used as a co-solubilizing agent and has good compatibility with a broad range of cationic, non ionic and anionic surfactants.
DermaFlux is Arch’s new active that controls moisture flux at the cellular level. It was designed to regulate the ability to channel moisture to the areas where it is needed most. The effect is achieved via up-regulation of the key water-channeling protein, Aquaporin-3. DermaFlux also controls water balance within the cellular membrane due to the presence of three key osmolytes and a sugar.
According to in vitro studies, a 1% treatment of DermaFlux keeps cells plump with moisture when compared to untreated control cells during the dehydrated state. Dermaflux responds to the demands of a changing environment by regulating skin’s moisture by helping it hold on to vital water even under the most demanding, dry conditions. Cognis Introduces Several New Products at PCIA
Cognis and its subsidiary Laboratoires Sérobiologiques showcased a broad portfolio of cosmetic materials at Personal Care Ingredients Asia, which was held March 14-16 in Guangzhou, China. Some of these products included high-performing solubilizers that are designed to provide a pleasant feel, both during and after product application.
Cognis also promoted a light and versatile emollient suitable for face, body, sun care or color cosmetics products. The emollient offers positive stimulation and fulfills the desire for a differentiated sensorial experience with a multi-dimensional softness.
Cognis also showed attendees a conditioning concept which offers good skin and hair conditioning effects in one. Its micronized lipid system delivers intensive conditioning effects for hair care concepts and excellent sensory properties in body wash products.
Also at its booth, Cognis presented a whitener with a high capacity to decrease melanogenesis and a differentiating mechanism compared to traditional direct tyrosinase inhibitors.
The new product is said to be well-tolerated, good for daily use, will not impact the color of formulations and is thereby meeting the market demand for a new generation of skin lighteners. Finally, Cognis has developed a high-performance thickening agent designed especially for difficult-to-thicken surfactant systems. More info: www.cognis.com.

Dow Corning Aerogels Provide Soft-Focus Effect
New studies demonstrate that in addition to their ability to absorb oil and modify rheology, Dow Corning silica silylate aerogel materials generate a soft-focus effect. The significant in vitro soft focus effect of these materials is an expression of the way light behaves on the skin and in wrinkles.
In general, wrinkles appear as dark, non-reflective areas because of the way light falls and remains there. In contrast, if light is reflected and diffused, the wrinkle appears less prominent.
Dow Corning silica silylate aerogels act as optical light diffusers, preventing light from becoming trapped, and allowing for transparency. More info: www.dow-corning.com.
Novel Exfoliation Cloth Cleans Skin Better
The Evolon II series of exfoliation cloths will out-perform all other media, according to Beauty Cloth International (BCI). Evolon II is a 70/30 polyester/nylon blend and is billed as being “chemical-free” and hypoallergenic. According to BCI, nano-scale microfiber cloths produce noticeably smoother and younger-looking skin, instantly and safely, without chemicals, crystals or lasers.
Strong, ultrafine, infinite length fibers, 100 times finer than human hair, slough off dead skin cells without damaging the epidermis. As a result, Evolon cloths measurably boost the performance of moisturizers, toners, acne formulas and sunless tanners because they are applied to the cleanest possible skin.
In recent months, BCI has expanded the number of configurations for the cloth with mitts, body pads, finger cotts, disposable sheets, towelettes and machine pads.
Duplex-sided pads offer two levels of abrasion. All designs are available for private label manufacturers. More info: www.beautycloth.com.
