Comments: Farouk Systems, Inc., Houston, TX, was founded in 1986 by Dr. Farouk M. Shami, a hairdresser who provides the professional beauty industry with the most advanced American technology based upon education, environment and ethics. Today, Farouk Systems distributes its products throughout the US and to more than 100 countries worldwide, and Shami owns 25 patents, including the world’s first ammonia-free hair color. The company has over 600 CHI partner cosmetology schools and conducts more than 100 shows and 5,000 classes worldwide to help educate hairdressers.
Last August, Farouk Systems, Inc. hosted its biennial global conference titled “Light It Up.” The three-day company event showcased Farouk Systems’ ability to brighten the future of beauty professionals with the latest advancements and technology. The conference was held at Moon Palace Resort & Spa in Cancun, Mexico with over 4,000 worldwide guests in attendance. Attendees included hairdressers, sales personnel, and distributors along with media, Miss Universe 2017 Iris Mittenaere, Miss USA 2017 Kára McCullough, former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, former Miss USA Nia Sanchez and Olivia Jordan plus special guests from South Korea’s, LG Group. In addition, educational teams from over 12 countries presented multiple runway shows, representing the US, Canada, South America, The Middle East, Asia, Australia and Europe.
Farouk Systems, which calls itself “a company of hairdressers for hairdressers,” worked to help raise aid for its fellow hairdressers and salons impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The company initiated the #Hairdressers4Hairdressers campaign seeking hairdressers, salons and schools to participate in a Nation-wide Cut-A-Thon to raise money for the Professional Beauty Industry’s Disaster Relief Fund. All of the proceeds went to their relief efforts to help hairdressers restore their businesses and livelihood. More than 17 CHI Partner Schools committed to the Cut-A-Thon. Shami donated $5,000,000 in products and tools to various shelters, churches, organizations, stylists and salons.
Farouk Systems also donated to: The Salvation Army, Houston Area Women’s Center, Gallery Furniture, Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, Community of Faith, Bethel Baptist Church, Greater First Missionary Baptist Church and Project Recover to name just a few.
In continuing with philanthropic efforts, in April, Farouk Systems collaborated with the Dress for Success Houston (DFSH) team to implement an event to empower women seeking employment. This event successfully allowed Farouk Systems to provide DFSH clients with the empowering tools to become employed and maintain a fresh new look and mindset as they continue to achieve their career goals.
Shami was honored by the Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) with its first ever “Outstanding Arab American Philanthropist Award.” The Center for Arab American Philanthropy’s goal this year is to not only award Dr. Shami for his charitable endeavors globally but also show him as a successful businessman and innovator. For more than 30 years, Shami tirelessly gave to hairdressers in need while helping his fellow man whenever a natural disaster occurred. He has helped to build schools for education and manufacturing plants to help those in need of a career or a job. Dr. Shami has also contributed to peace efforts in the Middle East with a philosophy of building bridges rather than divisions. He stands as a leader in protecting the environment, holding true to strong ethics, according to CAAP.
In addition to his humanitarian efforts, he serves on the board of many organizations including the NDUF (National Defense University Foundation) and is a frequent speaker on leadership at Harvard University. His many awards include: The Palestinian Diaspora Award, The International Salon/Spa Business Network (ISBN) Legend Award, Apollo Green Award, Beautymaker Award (BMA) and BMA’s First World Humanitarian, Arab American Businessman of the Year, and the 2003 Ameristar Award.
For the past 16 years, Farouk Systems, Inc. has served as the official hair care sponsor for the Miss Teen, Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants. A team of Farouk Systems global artists worked diligently backstage to design show-stopping hairstyles that empowered each contestant to feel her most confident as they competed for the crown.
On the professional side, Farouk Systems, Inc. participated in the America’s Beauty Show and the Premiere Show. While on the marketing side, the company threw a lavish celebration at Dylan’s Candy Bar to launch the CHI Lava Iron and hosted an Esquire Grooming event at Hearst Tower to introduce the staff to the ultimate grooming collection with fresh new looks and polished styles.
