The U.S. EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) labeling program has extended its reach to include products designed for dermal contact which includes personal care products. Recognized by retailers as a mark of environmental preference, the DfE mark not only influences consumer purchasing decisions but also assures that products are safer for human health and the environment. Purchasers and users can quickly identify safer personal care products that do not sacrifice quality or performance. DfE-labeled products do not contain chemicals of concern, such as known carcinogens or reproductive and developmental toxicants. Under the DfE program every ingredient in a product is evaluated based on its human health and environmental characteristics, within the context of its component class (ie. as a surfactant, solvent, etc.). DfE also reviews whole product characteristics that include PH and irritation.
