Happy Birthday Razor Blade!

Today marks the anniversary of what could very well be considered ground zero in the men’s grooming market.
On Dec. 2, 1901, an American named King Camp Gillette patented a disposable safety razor. His invention gave birth to Gillette, which was sold to P&G in 2005 in a whopping $57 billion deal.
Could King Camp have imagined today’s disposable razors? His patented technology is a far cry from the Gillette Fusion Power Phantom,  one of the the brand’s newest razors. It features 5-blade Shaving Surface technology that distributes force across the blades for significantly less irritation and more comfort.
Products like the Fusion Power Phantom—not to mention Gillette’s entire personal care range—are fueling the men’s marketplace today.  According to a new report from Packaged Facts, the global men’s grooming products market is expected to rise from $19.7 billion this year to $28 billion by 2014.

Last year more than 500 new men’s grooming products hit the marketplace, according to Mintel, and more continue to flood shelves today.  Have any revolutionized the mass market the way the Gillette’s 1901 patent did?
