Luckily for Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, when it comes to hair sprays, gels, mousses and waxes, it’s a matter of style—and substance. Today’s products are an artful blend of ingredients designed to create and preserve a look while also caring for tender tresses.
According to Steve Goddard, founder of Pravana Naturceuticals, Woodland Hills, CA, overall awareness about health and the environment is driving both product development and consumer preference in the styling products market.
“People are much more attuned to what they are using, what they are ingesting, in their skin and their hair. We as manufacturers are looking to manufacture with the safest and most effective ingredients,” he told Happi.
But even as the focus on natural continues, when it comes to styling aids, performance attributes like all-day hold, curl retention and frizz protection remain priorities.
“The other side is performance,” Goddard added, noting that most consumers are likely to eschew a purely natural offering if it doesn’t perform. “We take a hybrid approach, find the best we can in natural and marry that with technology.”
The Inside Story
Aveda, too, has long focused on connecting natural and performance, and its latest styler is no exception. New Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray is a high-performance, fast-drying, firm hold finishing spray that provides all-day maximum hold and 24-hour humidity resistance. Aveda has taken its usual earth friendly focus further—Control Force has a net-zero impact on the Earth’s climate through Aveda’s funding of renewable energy, making it the first beauty company to offer aerosols with net-zero climate impact.
Control Force—which was put to the test at New York Fashion Week’s Fall/Winter Shows before hitting salon shelves—features a blend of organically-derived flaxseed, marshmallow root, aloe and hydrolyzed wheat protein, which help provide all-day, humidity-resistant, maximum hold and control; propanediol derived from corn for flexibility and flake control; and rice-bran derived oryzanol, which acts as a UV filter and antioxidant. In addition, Control Force has fully traceable “Soil to Bottle” aroma, derived from organic essential oils of Bulgarian lavender, bergamot, palmarosa, vetiver and Bulgarian rose.
Fekkai’s Summer Hair Marine Collection for 2010. |
“With Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Nutrient Spray, dry, damaged hair is transformed into well-nourished, healthy-looking hair—allowing you to create your ideal end look,” Peeler noted.
Also new to the Garnier stable are two non-aerosol SKUs within the Anti-Humidity Hairspray Collection, a range that debuted in 2009. The new non-aerosol versions—Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Hairspray and Full Control Anti-Humidity Hairspray—contain bamboo extract and are said to impart 24-hour, bounce-back hold and natural, healthy-looking movement even in 90% humidity.
Peeler suggested that the new non-aerosol SKUs will nicely compliment, not cannibalize, the aerosol sprays.
Hit the Beach (Or Look Like You Did) Forget self tanner. If consumers want to look like they’ve spent a day on the beach, there’s a wave of new styling products that can help. Take PreGame Texturizing Spray from A Beautiful Life Brands LLC, for example. This all-natural, salt-based beach spray formulation contains argan oil, Dead Sea salt, pink Himalayan salt, aloe vera extracts, grapefruit seed oil and honey to nourish hair and scalp and create beach texture, according to the Lambertville, NJ-based firm. P2 by Philip Pelusi has rolled out BeachComber, a water-based styling and treatment paste infused with an organic cocktail of plant extracts and antioxidants, including cane juice granules, grapefruit, lemon and olive oils, apricot and milk thistle. A paste, it builds waves and texture, smoothes hair cuticles, increases root volume, provides flexibility and gives hair that sexy, fresh-from-the-beach waviness without typical product build-up, according to the company. It can be applied to dry hair as a mid-day grooming and styling product, worked throughout wet hair for a root lift or used in a lightweight, air-dried look. Frédéric Fekkai is beach-bound too. The Fekkai Summer Hair Marine Collection for 2010 includes Beach Waves, a lightweight styling spray that, when applied to damp or dry hair, creates “instant tousled, touchable, windswept texture.” |
Bamboo is also a key ingredient in Sebastian Professional’s Volupt Spray, part of its new Volupt range which rolled out in February. The volume-building spray gel is also formulated with “cushion particle technology” and flexible polymers that deliver volume, softness and heat protection, according to the company.
Also riding the natural wave is Alberto Culver’s TreSemme, which has rolled out new stylers this spring. Under its TreSemme Naturals umbrella is a new finishing spray, a non-aerosol product formulated with aloe vera, and a new lightweight mousse that features sweet orange extract. In addition, TreSemme’s new Fresh Start collection includes new styling options, specifically a no-frizz crème and a refreshing mist. The mist is said to eliminate odors and leave hair smooth and shiny. All four styler products hit mass-market shelves in March.
A Time for Texture
While most consumers are comfortable with sprays, gels and mousses, Redken delivers hip style via waxes, crèmes and pastes—products that often attract a younger demographic. To serve this style savvy audience, the company has expanded its collection in 2010 with new Wax Blast 10 and Structure Wax 17.
“Both Wax Blast 10 and Structure Wax 17 are two innovative formulas that are completely unique to Redken’s Styling collection,” Cathi Bell, director of marketing, Redken US, told Happi.
Bosley has created stylers for thinning hair. |
Texture is also on tap with Chatsworth, CA-based Sexy Hair, which has added new Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Volatizing & Texturizing Powder, a weightless, colorless and odorless product that adds dimension and texture. After it is sprinkled on and massaged into the scalp, the powder liquefies and dries on contact, absorbing into the hair shaft for instant volume and leaving a matte finish with no residue.
If it’s silky straight that’s desired, salon guru Frédéric Fekkai has added a new range that works to prime, straighten and hold hair that way—without the dreaded hot iron. In addition to a shampoo and conditioner, the Fekkai Silky Straight Ironless range includes Smooth Finish Serum and Fekkai Coiff Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm. Key ingredients include a naturally harvested hibiscus protein to help strengthen and condition each strand, targeted silicones that only deposit where needed on the hair shaft, and Anti-Frizz Straightening Complex which delivers an effective deposition of targeted complex to prepare, create and maintain a silky smooth look on each hair strand surface, according to the brand, which was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 2008.
And between the two extremes is Pravana’s new Beach Wave Control Mist—suited for styling wavy or curly hair. According to Goddard, the coconut-vanilla scented product helps maintain the ever-so-trendy loose waves look—not the curls of the 70s of 80s or the stick-straight hair of the past decade.
According to Goddard, the goal was to create a styler that would build body and maintain the look of smooth waves of its Beach Wave process—with a key attribute being softness, not the more typical crunchy, tousled look. For Beach Wave Control Mist, Pravana turned to keratin, wheat and silk amino acids and botanicals that are known to infuse body and softness, such as jojoba seed and sunflower extract.
Targeted Tresses
Just as a hairstyle is a personal decision, the choice of styling product has become more individualized. While there are many gender-neutral, one-product-fits-all offerings in the styling aisle, stylers that speak to specific issues can resonate with consumers who desire a product that seems to be formulated just for them—even if they aren’t all alone in their specific predicament.
One such area is thinning hair. Although hair loss affects approximately 35 million men and 21 million women in the U.S., there hadn’t been a comprehensive line of salon hair care products to help treat this condition, according to Bosley Medical, which in turn has created Bosley Professional Strength hair care.
Developed in connection with Bosley Medical director Ken Washenik, the range includes Styling Gel for control and added thickness, Nourishing Leave-In treatment which detangles, protects and adds body, Styling Hairspray, and Styling Mousse for body texture and hold.
“Starches in the product help to create thicker looking hair,” said Bosley Professional Strength president Eric McLemore. “The weightless formulas are great to style and finish all fine and thinning hair while offering thermal styling protection.”
Happi columnist Colin Hession thinks L’Oréal has a winner on its hands with the line, which should make its way to the U.S. later this year.
“Male hair care in salons and the top end of retail has been a glaring hole waiting to be filled,” observed Hession, managing director, Colin Hession Consulting. “Colomer’s American Crew had things its own way for too long, and has seemingly failed to drive home its advantage.”
Sexy Hair’s Powder Play delivers texture. |
Salon vs. Store Brands
The chatter across the beauty industry has focused on the recession, and the same buzz can be heard in the hair care market.
Market analysis has shown that women have been stretching out the amount of time between salon trips in an effort to cut costs, and consumers who may have traditionally purchased salon products have experimented with other options.
“Consumers are frequenting the salons less often and trying out products in mass,” said Garnier’s Peeler.
“We did see a softening—everyone did—especially in the retail sector. Hair care and styling, across the board, did slow down,” said Goddard.
While Goddard told Happi that there are signs of a rebound, he stressed the need for salon brands to always push ahead in product development, especially as mass-market brands become more sophisticated.
“For us, as marketers and manufacturers, we need to stay on the edge of development. When we launched Pravana six years ago it was one of just a few sulfate-free lines; sulfate-free has emerged in mass retail,” he said. “As a player in the professional salon industry, we are looked at as leaders in innovation. It is up to us to stay on the cutting edge, to make sure consumers stay with us.”
And despite mass market styling sales that have remained somewhat static over the past year (see chart above), mass market players see consumers trading down as a sea change not a stopgap measure.
“This transition from salon products over to Garnier Fructis products is a transition that makes sense, because they will find that our products are just as effective,” said Peeler. “We have always been the creator of powerfully performing, innovative formulas that are accessible, on-trend, and available at an affordable price, when many of our competitors are not. For this reason we see our loyal consumer-based growing even more, once the economy improves.”
