While on a photo shoot at the beach several years ago, an incoming wave mixed stylist Kevin Murphy’s homemade hair product with the on-set makeup artist’s eyeshadow.
“The result was brilliant,” he said, “it left behind a thick workable product that penetrated the hair without weighing it down. It was at that moment that I knew it was possible to utilize natural ingredients to create products unlike anything else on the market.”
Now, since its inception in 2003, Kevin Murphy has grown into an international company with distribution in over 4,000 top salons across the U.S., Australia, the UK, Hong Kong and Europe that features a full range of shampoos, conditioners, treatments and styling tools.
His latest launch is The Surfer Girl Kit ($29.95), for those looking to recreate summer’s beach-y tresses without spending a day in the sun and surf. The kit contains an oil-free beach texturizer to prepare hair, as well as curl clips to create and hold the wave, a balm to secure and prevent flyaways and a comb to mold the style. It also offers a live stream step-by-step video that stylists and consumers can download to their phone simply by scanning the box’s Quick Response (QR) barcode.
“I call this kit a shake and bake for hair,’” said Murphy about The Surfer Girl Kit. “Women don’t always have the time to go to a beauty supply store to find all the tools needed to recreate a hairstyle. Not only does this kit provide all the necessary items, my step-by-step video makes getting the surfer girl look foolproof.”
Other new products for Fall 2010 from Kevin Murphy include a Luxury Wash and Luxury Rinse ($$$) featuring Brazilian buriti nut oil and quillaja, a natural foaming agent; as well as Night Rider ($$), a men’s matte styling paste that uses essences of boronia, pink grapefruit and tangerine.
According to Murphy, his goal is to create a line of products that mimic the molecular structure of skin care treatments to provide essential volume to the hair.
“It became my mission to create products that offered stylists everything they wanted and needed,” Murphy said. “I work with a team of skin care scientists to develop products that would minimize the signs of aging and provide endless amounts of texture to tired, overworked tresses.”
