Get Glowing

By Melissa Meisel, Associate Editor | June 9, 2011

Bold colors and bronzed skin are big for Summer 2011.

The beauty industry is ready for Summer 2011. After all, last season was first time in two years thatprestige makeupexperienced category growth, according to The NPD Group, a Port Washington, NY-based market research firm.

Fueled by the double-digit growth of offerings from primers to anti-aging face products, to rich color options in lip and nail, five of the six segments within makeup posted growth. Three segments either met or outpaced category growth: Face (+3%), Lip (+3%), Nail (+39%). Eye (+2%) and Other Color (+1%) grew, but slightly behind the category. Gift sets declined in dollars, but had a unit growth of 3%, according to NPD.

So, what’s on trend?

“Beauty looks for Summer 2011 would include a pop of crisp color,” noted Tina Turnbow, a celebrity makeup artist based in New York, NY. “Citrus colors like lemon yellow, lime green and vibrant orange are very juicy and fun!”
“The hot looks for this summer are bold eyes, bold lips, a flawless face and flirty nails,” agreed Achelle Dunaway, creative director and makeup artist for e.l.f. cosmetics, New York, NY.
“People are already getting ready for the summer,” added Noel Sweeny, makeup artist and co-founder of Addiction NV Cosmetics, Huntington Beach, CA. “Girls are craving that dewy healthy glow with a nude shimmer.”

A Sunkissed Look
Healthy skin can be achieved from the outside in with this season’s selection of bronzers and powders. At Too Faced, the latest bronzer kit is The Bronzed & The Beautiful French Riviera Edition. The set includes three bestselling bronzing formulas, an exclusive complexion-enhancing golden powder and deluxe SPF 20 Primed & Poreless Tint. Plus, a “lesson” shows the user how to apply the desired look.
Life’s a Beach is a new tinted mineral moisturizer with SPF 20 at Addiction NV. This mineral-based, oil-free product contains Addiction’s signature Natural High, a fusion of panax ginseng, olive leaf and chamomile extract. Also new is the Wannabe: Glow Getter Pressed Mineral Powder. According to the company, it gives cheeks, eyes, neck and even décolletage a girlish, glowing hue.
Lorac's Red Carpet Collection.
The newest innovation at Tarte is Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder in Bronze. Like the original, this micronized clay product mattifies skin, minimizes the appearance of pores and replenishes all skin types, now while adding a natural touch of bronze to the complexion.

Meanwhile, popular mass market line e.l.f. is rolling out a Radiance Enhancer, a multi-use highlighter said to “instantly transform and enhance features with a glowing veil of warmth and luminosity.” A lightweight, velvety formula provides a fresh and silky finish for a healthy and natural looking lit-from-within glow. The company also rolled out a tinted moisturizer with SPF 20.

Lorac, known for its sizzling summer products such as Tantalizer body bronzer/luminizer, is offering its popular product in the TantalEyes Palette, a limited edition set of four shimmering mineral-infused eye shadows and a travel-sized Tantalizer for a complete beauty kit to get Red Carpet ready, according to the company.
Pretty Peepers
Attractive eye makeup is always a must-have in beauty products each season, and this summer proves no exception to the rule. At Philosophy, the marketer is taking anti-aging products to the next level with a new line of cosmetics exclusive to QVC. The Divine Illumination collection features everything from foundations to lipgloss, but a standout SKU is its eyecolor. Divine Long-Wear Creamy Eye Color Duo features a liquid eyeshadow said to be creaseproof and nourishing at the same time. Colors range from gold to olive to rose and are subtle and flattering to most skin tones.
Philosophy's summer color collection includes brown sugar.
The stylesetters at Three Custom Color Specialists loved the bright washes of color around the eyes seen at Jason Wu, Luca Luca, Betsey Johnson and Oscar De La Renta during Fashion Week so much that they were inspired to create three new shades in their makeup artist favorite wet/dry eyeshadow formulation. Skip your browns, grays, and beiges and get ready to turn it up with these bold new shades: Voltage, a bright purple; Amped, a splashy orange; and Electric, an intense true blue.
Urban Decay melds both the natural eye and bold eye trend with its new Rollergirl Eyeshadow Palette. This new summer palette offers a combination of three neutral shadows (Darkhorse, Suspect and a new pearl hue, Verve) and one pop of bright pink (Woodstock) to create shimmering neutral looks for work, with an easy-to-add hit of color for happy hour, according to the company. Urban Decay is also rolling out Lip Love Honey-Infused Lip Therapy by Urban Decay. Available in five shades ranging from punchy pink to warm nude, the SKU provides a sheer/stained effect with non-greasy lip-conditioning oils.
Another noteworthy palette release is from Smashbox. The Smashbox Studios Softbox is the fashion world’s best-kept beauty secret, according to the company. Surrounded by floor to ceiling windows, the unique studio lets in a flood of natural light, creating beautifully diffused, dreamlike photos. Drawing upon Softbox Studio’s signature aesthetic, the latest eye palette and lip gloss collection from Smashbox Cosmetics features nude eye hues and neutral lip glosses handpicked by Smashbox studios makeup artists for hazy, seductive eyes and super-seductive lips plus the must-have Photo Finish Lid Primer. The Smashbox Softbox Eye Palette also features the all new TagReader app. Scan the tag with your smartphone or browse the included Get the Look booklet for Softbox how-tos from Smashbox Studios makeup artists.
Available this summer, Paul & Joe’s new lid lacquers called Eye Gloss Duos are infused with two textures: whipped jelly and a watery, pearl-enhanced base, to give eyes translucency while showcasing them glamorously, according to the company. In addition to utilizing dual textures, a champagne shimmer from their signature Secret D’Or will leave eyes sparkling like jewels with a long-lasting satin finish.Eye Gloss Duos have the consistency of a gel, yet wear like a powder without smearing or caking, with a base that contains an ample amount of liquid for continuous moisture throughout the day. Standout ingredients include orange flower water, white lily extract, jojoba and sunflower oil.
Finally, give your eyes a splash of bold color or create a sultry stare with new Stila Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner – a summer beauty essential that won’t wash away with the waves. A blend of pearls and intense pigment, these jewel-toned liquid eyeliners are infused with twinkling micro-glitter for a sophisticated sparkle. According to the company, the innovative formula contains a special polymer that keeps the glitter and pigment right where it belongs for all-day, waterproof wear.
Nailing the Look
Brights and neutrals also rule in nail color this season. Discover a treasure trove of color with New Brights by OPI, Inspired by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The collection feature six bold hues plus a new Silver Shatter—a leading topcoat trend in textured nail polish. Inspired by graffiti art, this shade leaves behind a crackled, two-texture silver finish when painted over any dry OPI hue.
“OPI is thrilled to celebrate the latest film in this beloved series,” said Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI executive vice president and artistic director. “The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides lacquers were inspired by a world filled with mythical mermaids, gleaming treasure, and high-seas adventure. With shades ranging from sage and lavender to khaki gray and pastel pink, these colors are evocative of a warm, tropical setting, with a classic nautical influence.”
The Bronzed & the Beautiful Collection.
Orly is set to debut Pinup—inspired by the “unapologetic glitz and free-spirited attitude of the most iconic pinup girls,”according to the company. Pinup offers a shade for every glamour girl, from the sophisticated seductress to the fearless rock ‘n roll goddess.Bright, feminine crèmes mingle with eye catching jewel-tone glitters to offer a range of colors sure to turn heads.
This summer, Dior is rolling out a limited edition nail range, Rock Your Nails. According to reports, it is a fashion-forward line of limited edition Dior Vernis shades in Dior’s long-lasting formulations. Prices range around $20 each. The collection includes five colors and a top finish, Rock Coat. The collection also includes turquoise, purple, slate grey, navy and taupe colors.
At Essie, the super-chic tropical nation of Brazil is the ideal setting for a stunning array of six colorful shades. Bold oranges and hot, risqué pinks transport you to paradise with the stroke of a brush. Imagine diving into crystalline azure waters and cavorting on white quartz beaches. Just forget the plane ticket and escape with color.
“When the temperature soars, I embrace the heat as the perfect excuse to play with fiery colors,” company founder and color director Essie Weingarten said. “Summer color should pop, sizzle and be brazenly alluring.”
And, Zoya released a unique finish, Mod Matte, this season. According to the company, the nail polish is intended to be worn with a base coat, but not a topcoat or speed dryer of any kind for its full effects. Colors include Mitzi (neon yellow), Lolly (neon pink) and Phoebe (neon blue).
From punchy brights to neutral classics, anything goes for Summer 2011 as long as its easy on the eyes.
